Seaweed amphipod

Hyale grandicornis
Fun Fact: They are the most numerous amphipod on rocky shores.

Introduction: Seaweed amphipods (Hyale grandicornis) are the most numerous amphipod on rocky shores which nestle amongst seaweeds (hence the name) which adds to their survival rate. The first pair of antennae are shorter than the second and there are larger nippers in the males than females found in the second pair of legs.

Distribution: Found along all Namibian coastal waters including Bogenfels, Luderitz, Sandwich Harbour, Cape Cross, Terrace Bay, Torra Bay and the mouth of the Kunene River mouth.

Diet: They graze on various seaweeds

Colouration: Green or brown often with 1 or more circular white dots on each thoracic segment

Breeding: Eggs hatch into fully grown adults

Max size: 10mm
