Big eye amphipod

Introduction: Big-eye amphipods (Paramoera amphipod) are the most common and numerous amphipods swimming in plankton especially at night and amongst seaweeds. So-called because of the unusually large eyes that almost meet on the top of the head.

Distribution: Found throughout Namibian coastal waters including Terrace Bay, Torra Bay, Cape Cross, Walvis Bay and Luderitz.

Diet: Feeds on detritus and carrion

Colouration: Variable colouring usually pale or mauve with a red 'saddle' across the back

Breeding: Eggs hatch directly into adult from a visible brood pouch

Max size: 10mm
