Fun Fact: Otter shells are large and elongate in shape.

Introduction: Otter shells (Lutraria lutraria) are large and elongate in shape with a characteristic spoon-shaped depression inside. The valves open widely at both ends. Otter shells are buried up to 30cm in muddy sands.

Distribution: Throughout Namibian waters including Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour and Henties Bay.

Diet: Extends their non-retractile siphons to the surface.

Colouration: White to dirty yellow

Breeding: Thousands of eggs are shed into the water and develop into planktonic larvae.

Max size: 135mm
