Fun Fact: Westcoast steenbras are a sought after sport and table fish.

Introduction: Westcoast steenbras (Lithognathus aureti) are a sought after sport and table fish. Unfortunately over fishing has resulted in smaller catches. Features include numerous series of distinct scales along the lateral line, well-developed fins and a deep body. Lithognathus means 'stone-jawed' a reference to their molar teeth and aureti remembers a Mr. Auret, a well-known lighthouse keeper who first noticed the difference between this species and white steenbras.

Distribution: From the Orange River mouth north through Luderitz, Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, Henties Bay, Torra Bay, Terrace Bay extending as far as the Kunene River mouth.

Diet: Sand mussels, marine worms and crabs.

Colouration: Greyish-silver body with 7 to 9 crossbars on the flanks and a pale belly.

Breeding: Massive shoals reproduce in spring and summer, especially around Walvis Bay and northwards after August. Juveniles have been recorded near Swakopmund.
