Umbrina canariensis
Fun Fact: Tasselfish are also known as baardman or croakers.

Introduction: Tasselfish (Umbrina canariensis) are also known as baardman or croakers. They are sluggish with a fairly robust body, with a distinctive steep, but evenly curved head shape. Adults prefer shallow water along bays or rocky shores although shoals are formed with other species. Umbrina means 'shade loving' and canariensis 'of the Canary Islands'.

Distribution: The coastal waters of the Skeleton Coast including Terrace Bay, Torra Bay, Henties Bay, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour and Luderitz.

Diet: Feeds mainly on crabs, prawns and worms.

Colouration: Silver to golden yellow with a light belly and dusky or shiny fins.

Breeding: No studies of their breeding cycles have been recorded or published.

Max size: 75cm

Max weight: 12.6kg
