Hake

Introduction: Hake (Merluccius capensis) inhabit water from 50 to 400m. They are either trawled or caught by line and is one of Namibia's premier fish food sources in restaurants, especially in Swakopmund or Walvis Bay. Merluccius means 'sea pike' and capensis'of the Cape'.

Distribution: Very common off the coastal regions such as Terrace Bay, Torra Bay and Henties Bay.

Diet: Lanternfish, rattails, maasbankers (horse mackerel) and juvenile hake

Colouration: Drab silvery-grey with a whitish underside and grey fins

Breeding: August and September appear to be the most productive months for spawning, which happens throughout the year.
