Crocothemis sanguinolenta
Fun Fact: Small Scarlets are always around small rocks, fast-moving waters and at times waterfalls.

Introduction: Small Scarlets (Crocothemis sanguinolenta) are always around small rocks, fast-moving waters and at times waterfalls. Sanguinolenta is Latin for 'splattered with blood'.

Distribution: Baines Mountains, Kaokoland, Damaraland and the Naukluft Mountains.

Colouration: Obvious pink colouration at the sides of the thorax, reddish pterostigma.

Breeding: Larvae gathers around the bases of sedges and in the smaller ponds in waterfalls. Development takes around 60 days.

Flight season: Throughout the year.

Max size: 35mm.

Conservation: The Otavi Mountain and Waterberg populations have disappeared and are believed to be extinct.
