Introduction: Cataract Hooktails (Paragomphus cataractae) can be identified with some ease by the distinct spine ending of the upper appendage. Their preference for fast-flowing waters is referred to in the Latin (from Greek) cataractae, which means 'of the waterfall'.
Distribution: Epupa Falls on the Kunene River, Popa Falls on the Kavango River and the Zambezi River Rapids at Katima Mulilo.
Colouration: Bright green thorax without markings
Breeding: Larvae live in sandy patches in the rapids.
Flight season: February to April.
Max size: 50mm.
Conservation: Near threatened, mainly due to habitat destruction. The construction of dams at rapids for power is the threat.
