Souzas shrike

Fun Fact: Souza's shrike is named after the Portuguese zoologist JA de Souza.

Introduction: Souza's shrike (Lanius souzae) is named after the Portuguese zoologist JA de Souza (1836-1889). Broad-leaved woodland with Zambezi teak is their preferred habitat, usually singly or in pairs.

Distribution: Rare visitor to Popa Falls and other eastern Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) areas near the Kavango River.

Diet: Hunts from perch, dropping down to catch beetles, spider and occasionally small birds.

Description: Pale grey forehead and crown, with white borders, black ear and lore coverts, mid-grey nape to upper mantle colouration. Rump and upper tail coverts grey, dark brown tail, white chin and throat, black bill, legs and feet and dark brown eyes.

Breeding: Extralimital.

Size: 17cm.

Weight: 25g.
