Short toed rock thrush
Monticola brevipesIntroduction: Short-toed rock-thrush (Monticola brevipes) inhabit mainly mountains (Monticola) with characteristic rocky outcrops, inselbergs, river valleys supporting scattered bushes and trees and also in towns and villages.
Distribution: Hartmannberge, Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, the Khomas Hochland and Auas Mountains around Windhoek and scattered rocky locations in the southern region of the country.
Diet: Forages on the ground for beetles, grasshoppers, scorpions, termites and ants as wells as millipedes. Also takes seeds and fruits.
Description: A small to medium-sized, short-footed (brevipes) thrush with a slender bill with a hooked tip. Both male and female birds have a blue-grey head with orange bellies and tails. Mimics calls of other species from this family.
Breeding: Females lay 2 to 4 eggs from November to March and incubated for around 14 days.
Size: 18cm.
Weight: 60g.
