Fun Fact: Sand martins frequent the banks of streams or rivers as well as other water bodies such as sewage works and surrounding grasslands.

Introduction: Sand martins (Riparia riparia) frequent the banks of streams or rivers as well as other water bodies such as sewage works and surrounding grasslands. They perch on fences, on low bushes or on the ground.

Distribution: Most common in the Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip) but also observed in Epupa Falls and Etosha National Park. Less common in scattered populations south as far as the Orange River.

Diet: Eats mainly flying insects by foraging aerially over open water or close to vegetation. Will take food from the ground.

Description: Mousey grey-brown upper parts, white throat, brown breast band, white belly.

Breeding: Extralimital.

Size: 12cm.

Weight: 13g.
