Olive tree warbler

Introduction: Olive-tree warbler (Hippolais olivetorum) inhabit umbrella thorn, black thorn and sickle-bushes associated with dry Acacia savannah regions. Although not a shy species, they do tend to remain under cover, making them difficult to observe.

Distribution: A non-breeding migrant to Namibia. Sightings have been recorded in Etosha National Park and Windhoek.
Diet: Mostly invertebrates.

Description: The largest of the grey coloured warblers in southern Africa, even though the genus name Hippolais is Greek for 'a small warbler-like bird'. Features include long wings, a broad bill and a square tail. Is a frequent singer, usually from the safety of thorn bush cover.
Breeding: Extralimital. Present in the country from December, departing late March.
