Golden weaver

Introduction: Golden weavers (Ploceus xanthops) head for vegetation along northern perennial rivers and tall grasses on forest edges and woodland savannah.

Distribution: Occurs only along the Kunene River, Epupa Falls, Kavango River, Rundu and the Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip). Common in the Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve.
Diet: Forages within dense vegetation for caterpillars, termites and grasshoppers. Also takes fruits, berries and nectar.

Description: (Xanthops) is the Greek meaning for 'golden eye' referring to their pale yellow eyes. Other features include a golden yellow head and nape, brown flight feathers, a yellow underwing and an olive-green back and tail.
Breeding: Males build up to 5 kidney-shaped nests, lined by the female, which are suspended from drooping vegetation. From 1 to 3 eggs are laid August to April and incubated for up to 15 days.
