Collared flycatcher

Collared flycatcher

Ficedula albicollis
Fun Fact: Collared flycatchers only inhabit open country with scattered trees and forest edges and moist woodland.

Introduction: Collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis) only inhabit open country with scattered trees and forest edges and moist woodland. This enables this shy bird to cover in the foliage of the tree canopy, only venturing out for food before retreating to a different perch.

Distribution: Confined to Kaudom Park and a rare visitor to eastern Etosha National Park and the Zambezi Region (formerly the Caprivi Strip).
Diet: Ficedula is Latin for 'fig-eating' an incorrect observation as they are attracted to visiting insects.

Description: A small, short-billed flycatcher. A short series of high-pitched notes is mixed with other calls. Distinctive white neck (albicollis).
Breeding: Extralimital.

Size: 13cm.

Weight: 15g.
