Black throated canary

Introduction: Black-throated canaries (Crithagra atrogularis) can be observed in a wide range of habits including mopane savannah, saline desert and dry riverine woodland and grassy Nama Karoo. They are also attracted to gardens and villages.

Distribution: Widespread throughout Namibia, less for southern Namib Desert.
Diet: Forages in tufts of grass and in forbs and shrubs for flowers, insects and seeds. Requires access to water hence their absence from the southern Namib Desert.

Description: Bold yellow rump, blackish-brown tail, pale pinkish belly and flanks. Pink horn. Atrogularis is Latin for 'black throat.
Breeding: From 2 to 4 eggs are laid daily in a cup of dry grass from November to March. Incubation is for up to 15 days.

Size: 12cm.
