Ruppells korhaan

Eupodotis rueppellii
Fun Fact: Rüppell's korhaan is named after the German explorer, collector and naturalist Wilhelm Rüppell.

Introduction: Rüppell's korhaan (Eupodotis rueppellii) is named after the German explorer, collector and naturalist Wilhelm Rüppell. Found in areas of low rainfall they are usually observed singly, in pairs or family groups.

Distribution: The gravel and sandy plains of the Namib Desert, Namib-Naukluft Park and the Skeleton Coast.

Diet: Pecks at invertebrates on the ground as they walk including termites, small reptiles and vegetable matter such as seeds and succulent leaves. An occasional drinker.

Description: Medium-sized bustard with a small crest and pale underparts. Eupodotis is the Greek word for 'swift bustard'.

Breeding: Between 1 and 3 eggs are laid on the ground in a shallow scrape incubated by the female.

Size: 55cm.

Weight: 1.2kg.
