Red necked falcon

Introduction: Red-necked falcons (Falco chicquera) predominately inhabit open, savannah woodland, with short grass or palm savannah and arid savannahs. They are most active morning and evenings, singly or in pairs, close to waterholes where other potential bird prey congregate.

Distribution: Etosha National Park, Kalahari Desert, Caprivi and southern central plateau regions.

Diet: Eats mainly small to medium-sized birds such as swallows and small mammals (bats and rodents), grasshoppers, termites and beetles.

Description: Chicquera is derived from the French (and derived from Hindi shikra) meaning a 'hawk or hunter'. Chestnut nape to crown.

Breeding: Females lay between 2 and 4 eggs in July to October and incubated for over 30 days.

Size: 35cm.

Weight: 240g.
