Introduction: Grey kestrels (Falco ardosiaceus) supplement their diet with the husks of the northern lala palm which is under some threat in Namibia, as locals kill the trees to process the palms for sap.
Distribution: Range restricted to Ovambo and north-eastern Kunene regions of central north Namibia.
Diet: Hunts from perch, pylons or a tall palm for mainly insects and lizards, rodents and small birds.
Description: Ardosiaceus is Latin for lead-coloured referring to the overall uniform slate grey colouration.
Breeding: Between 3 and 5 eggs are laid in September and incubated for around 30 days.
Size: 32cm.
Weight: 250g.
