One of the most celebrated specimens of rock art in Namibia was proclaimed as “the rock drawings on the farm Oase.” They date from various periods, and the term drawings is misleading, as they are clearly rock paintings. There are 71 individual paintings or groups thereof in the cave, and they depict:
To view this site, the paintings are actually located in the Oase Cave on Farm Rostock-Süd, not at Oase Farm as stated in the original proclamation. The cave is visible from a considerable distance along the Maltahöhe–Walvis Bay road and lies about 15 km from the Oase Farmstead. It is approximately 80 km north of Solitaire. The grotto sits high on the flank of the Rostock massif, making it a distinctive landmark in the surrounding gravel plains.
These extraordinary paintings are accessible only by 4×4 vehicle, with the owner’s permission, and a private guide must accompany visitors, as the cave lies on private land. Access arrangements can usually be made through nearby lodges, including Rostock Ritz, which often facilitates guided excursions. An easy climb up the side of the Rostock Mountain reaches the cave.
