Namibia's trunk roads are expected to be quite busy starting tomorrow afternoon. Both Friday and Monday are public holidays in the land of unlimited adventure. Many are using the long weekend for a short trip or to visit family.
Namibians, like citizens of many countries, celebrate 1 May as Labor Day. Monday, 4 May, is Cassinga Day. It commemorates the victims of the devastating attack by South African forces on the SWAPO camp near Cassinga in 1978. SWAPO was fighting against the apartheid regime in South Africa at the time.
Authorities will be closed on Friday and Monday, same as many offices and shops. Supermarkets in larger towns should be open. However, they are not allowed to sell alcohol on public holidays or weekends – except from 8:00 to 13:00 on Saturdays.
Labour Day and Cassinga Day are just the first two public holidays in Namibia in May. They are followed by Ascension Day (14 May), Africa Day (25 May) and Genocide Remembrance Day (28 May). May is known as a month of celebration for good reason (see the overview of Namibian public holidays in Namibian.org's Travel Advice section).
