Day 1

Sesriem Campsite

Windhoek - Sossusvlei

Guests will be collected from their accommodation in Windhoek in a custom-made 10-seater 4x4 safari vehicle by 08h30. A briefing by your guide will take place before the 09h00 departure. The tour heads south to Rehoboth, a small town established in the 1870's by Baster settlers who had migrated from the Cape. A drive through the beautiful Khomas Hochland highlands follows, stopping right on the edge of the Great Escarpment. This not only gives you the opportunity to stretch your ... legs but to enjoy one of the country's most dramatic views from the top of the Spreetshoogte Pass. Once the steep descent from the Pass has been completed, the sparsely populated and vast open countryside of the expansive Namib Desert plains are only interrupted by the appropriately named settlement of Solitaire. The homemade apple pie here comes highly recommended! The last leg of your journey is from Solitaire to Sesriem. The stunning landscapes continues, enhanced with those first sightings of sand dunes in the distance.

Day 2

Sesriem Campsite

An early start is essential to witness a beautiful sunrise. After light refreshments your guide will lead you into Namib Naukluft NP, at 50,000 kilometers squared Namibia's largest conservation area. Once through the entrance the drive is 60 kilometers along a tarred road which runs next to the ephemeral Tsauchab River to Sossusvlei. First stop is Dune 45. (Most visitors assume it is so called because it is about 45 kilometers from Sesriem. Years ago the dunes were numbered by ... staff and by coincidence it happened to be number 45 on their map). Climb to the top for the best views of the sun rising over the sand dunes. Breakfast packs await after your descent. Your safari continues to Sossusvlei (the gathering place of water). The cooler morning hours provide the perfect opportunity to climb the biggest of dune of them all Big Daddy. Nearby is the eerie and much photographed Deadvlei, home to a number of ancient camelthorn trees. In and around (and underneath!) the dunes live a surprising variety of desert-adapted flora and fauna who somehow survive the inhospitable desert environment. Time for lunch under the shade of a camelthorn tree before you proceed back along the road to Sesriem Canyon, a natural feature carved by the Tsauchab River in the local sedimentary rock. Walk down the cool depths of this small canyon (1.5 kilometers long and 30 meters at its deepest) where water can be found on the canyon floor for most of the year. The name Sesriem is Afrikaans and means 'six belts'. Settlers had to attach together six oryx hide belts in order to reach buckets down into the canyon to scoop up water. Return to the campsite in the afternoon. Look forward to a refreshing sundowner and a tasty dinner, the ideal time to exchange your day's adventures with fellow travellers.
