This 8-day adventure provides the ultimate combination of ocean sailing and exhilarating dune driving through the Namib desert.
Check-in for this adventure is at 14h00 on day 1 from the Waterfront in Walvis Bay. After a thorough safety briefing and demonstration of the catamaran’s safety equipment and facilities, we head out to Pelican Point with its colonies of about 60,000 resident Cape Fur Seals. Coffee, tea and sweet treats are served whilst ensuring that everyone is comfortably settled in. Having passed Pelican Point we head out ... to the open Southern Atlantic and set sails. Sundowners of sparkling wine, cocktails and oysters are served on the outside deck, with dinner being served when the sun has set.
We sail throughout the night on our course to Lüderitz at about 20 Nautical miles offshore. Day 2 is spent relaxing on board. Upon reaching abeam Conception Bay we head a bit closer inshore to hug the coastline. Some of Namibia’s offshore island will be passed. With a bit of luck we will be joined by schools of Heaviside’s and Dusky ... dolphins, who often play at the bow of the catamaran, while the odd Humpback Whale may be spotted. Birds likely to be seen include several species of Albatrosses, Petrels, Skuas, Prions, Fulmars and Gulls. Guests are invited to assist with the rigging of sails, the navigation of the course to Lüderitz and general deckhanding. The evening will be spent with sundowners at sunset followed by a braai on board.
We will arrive in Lüderitz early on day 3. After docking in the Lüderitz harbour, guests will be transferred to the Nest Hotel for two nights. After guests have settled in, we will explore Lüderitz and surrounding areas in the afternoon, which will include visits to Sturmvogelbucht, Diaz point, the beach ... at Grosse Bucht and various small bays in between. We will have sundowners and dinner at Nest Hotel, during which we will also conduct a thorough briefing on the second part of the adventure, an exhilarating 4x4 camping drive through the Namib desert back to Walvis Bay. It is envisaged that this route will commence in Lüderitz and will take guests through the Namib Desert to Walvis Bay through an area formerly known as “Diamond Area no 2”. Places to be visited along the way include Silvia Hill, Meob Bay, Conception Bay and Sandwich Harbour. Desert wildlife, spectacular scenery, untouched beaches, abandoned mining settlements, miles of sand driving and shipwrecks are some of the attractions along the way.
Day 1: After backtracking for about 30km on the Luderitz to Aus main road, it is time to say goodbye to tar roads, starting an adventure of a lifetime. On day one we pass the ‘stompneus’ Ford and camp close to ‘Suzy’ lorry
Day 2: On the second day the trail leads north past ‘Suzy’ and the Bulldozer, before crossing into the dune belt on way to Sylvia Hill. For the next couple of days participants will experience ‘camping under the desert sky’ in true expedition style
Day 3: Dunes are getting progressively higher. The dune belt opens up at Meob bay and it is in this stretch between Meob Bay and Conception Bay that where active diamond mining was in the order of the day during the early 1900’s. The Settlements of Holsatia, Charlottenfelder and Grillenberger are visited on the way.
Day 4: From Holsatia the trail leads to Conception Bay and along the beach northwards towards Sandwich Bay. On route the wrecks of the ‘Eduard Bohlen’ & ‘Shawnee’ are visited. Passing ‘Langewand’ where massive dunes end in the sea, given a very limited time span to negotiate this stretch of beach. After ‘Langewand’ the trail once again leads into the dunes, circumnavigating the Salt ... Pans ‘extensions’ of Sandwich Harbour. The dunes are still getting progressively larger to offer an ever changing new experience of ultimate dune driving. The night is spend approximately 1.5km from the sea.
Day 5: From Sandwich the trail enters the ‘Roller Coaster’, a series of massive ‘roaring’ slip faces, not only giving the participants a new thrilling experience but also offering breathtaking views of Sandwich Harbour and a panorama of Sandscapes exiting onto the beach south of Walvis Bay. The trail ends at Walvis Bay after a final 50km stretch of beach driving.
