Tok Tokkie Walking Safari

2 Days

The Tok Tokkie Hiking Trail is a 3 day guided desert hike on the NamibRand Nature Reserve. This hiking trail is designed for walkers who prefer to experience the desert at a leisurely pace, with the emphasis being on quality time with your guide, who will take time to explain the intricacies of the desert fauna and flora. The Tok Tokkie is well-known for having a high level of guiding and every effort will be made to ensure that the desert organisms usually not seen whilst driving through the desert, can be closely observed. The terrain offers mountains as well as sandy desert; this provides the opportunity to see the whole desert, not only the dunes.

You will need to make your own way to the start of this hike - most people include this particular hike in their self-drive safari around Namibia. The starting point is close to the dunes at Sossusvlei, so spending a night at one of the nearby lodges is advisable. All you need to bring is your hiking boots, everything else is supplied.

- Enjoy walking at an easy pace, normally not exceeding 10 km a day.
- You only carry your day pack, including a lunch bag, water and your camera equipment.
- Your main luggage will be transported by a back-up vehicle.
- Close up viewing of desert fauna and flora. Learn about this living desert.
- Enjoy simple desert luxury - a hot bucket shower and bush toilet with a view.
- Delicious 3-course meals are served for dinner out in the dunes.
- Walking is in small groups of 2 to 8 people for personal attention and tranquility.
- Larger groups can be catered for on request.
- Ideal for families.
- Perfect for honeymooners and all romantics

Day 1

Tok Tokkie Trail

Arrival at the Tok Tokkie Guesthouse should be by 14h00. You will be given a day pack including a water bottle and something to eat - nuts and fruit etc, and you can add your camera and binoculars, plus a book to read during the heat of the day. Pack a bag with clothes you need for the next two days, and the support vehicle will bring it to the overnight campsites. You are transferred by car to the starting ... point of the trail, about a half-hour's drive through the dunes, and after you have been dropped off, the vehicle proceeds to the overnight stop, in the heart of the sand dunes. These are not the dunes at Sossusvlei, but smaller, vegetated ones that have a unique beauty of their own. A short walk to the overnight stop brings you to the camp, where you can relax with a sundowner, whilst enjoying the magnificent scenery and to get used to that 'desert feeling.'

Day 2

Tok Tokkie Hiking Trail

Early morning tea/coffee are served before sunrise. After a quick breakfast it's on the way sharpish to avoid walking in the heat of the day. Today's walk heads up to the highest point of a small pass, with breathtaking views of both dunes and plains. A good part of the morning is spent in the mountain, before descending down the other side into a dry riverbed. Insect life adapted to the harsh environment is prolific here, and the birding is ... good with possible sightings of Namib endemics such as the Dune Larks. Larger animals including the bat-eared fox, Cape fox and oryx may be spotted as well. During the hottest part of the day it's time to rest in the shade and have a hearty brunch, with time afterwards for a siesta and reflection of the morning's activities and sightings. The walk continues through the dunes and onto the second overnight stop, overlooking the dune sea sands and gravel plains. This is a perfect opportunity to for photographing the spectacular shadows on the dunes, and the ever-changing palette of colours shortly before sunset. The sound of barking geckos petting for a wife, the occasional cry of the hyena and more likely than not, the silence of the desert, will accompany you through the night.
