Scenic Desert Fat Bike Tour

Feel the fresh coastal air, take-in the silence and breathtaking scenery of the oldest desert in the world while enjoying the thrill of cycling up and down Namibia’s famous dunes. The tour starts at our office in the Swakopmund Town centre, where you are equipped with a fat bike to your size, the mandatory helmet and a bottle of water in the bike bottle cage. After a short safety briefing and introduction from our experienced guide it is a short 2km cycle through town giving you a feel for the cool Swakopmund ‘vibe’ on the way to the Swakop riverbed. Heading down into the riverbed you start to appreciate the fat tires as they glide over the soft river sand. Next we drop a few gears to start ascending the first dune, drawing a smile on the face as you take in the strange experience of cycling on a dune. The scenery is beautiful and surreal. You are so close to nature but at the same time able to travel a good distance with little ease. Regular stops are great to drink some water, pull out the camera for some amazing shots and rest before taking on the next section while the guide shares some interesting information about the area, animal and plant life in the desert.

As the tour goes on we gradually reach some higher dunes until we get to the adrenalien section where we have the opportunity to race down the steep side (slip face) of some dunes. Starting with a baby slope and working up to the black slope. Those who opt to skip the drops can just enjoy the view and take some selfies. From here we head back along the riverbed to end along the beach passing some Dromedaris along the way. Smiles all around.

The tour is a great experience for the whole family with smaller bikes suitable for kids from the age of 7.
