Holidaymakers in Namibia can expect a lot of traffic on the roads from this afternoon. Many Namibians are going on a short vacation or visiting their family. Thanks to three public holidays, you can take a whole week off if you take the two bridging days off.
Most Namibians will probably be travelling today and tomorrow. On Sunday in a week's time, 1 June, heavy return traffic is to be expected. On these days, the police usually step up their traffic controls. The maximum speed limit is 120 km/h on tarmac roads and 80 km/h on gravel roads.
In addition, many authorities, offices and shops are likely to be closed throughout. Supermarkets in the larger towns, however, are usually open.
The series of public holidays begins with Africa Day on 25 May. As it falls on a Sunday, it is celebrated on Monday according to Namibian public holiday regulations.
On Wednesday, 28 May, Namibia celebrates Genocide Remembrance Day. It commemorates the victims of OvaHerero and Nama during the colonial wars of 1904 - 1908 in what was then German South West Africa. This Remembrance Day takes place for the first time after Namibia's government proclaimed it a year ago.
Thursday 29 May is Ascension Day. This Christian day is a public holiday in predominantly Protestant Namibia.
