Namibia holidaymakers should take extra care on the highways and busy gravel roads from today until Monday. Many Namibians will be travelling over the Easter weekend. The police have warned drivers to strictly adhere to the traffic regulations and, above all, the speed limits.
A serious accident involving four lorries occurred on the B1 highway 12 km south of Otjiwarongo already early this morning. The road was temporarily closed. Some of the lorries were carrying chemicals for the B2Gold gold mine, which is located south of Otavi.
Many Namibians are visiting their families. More than half of the population lives in the north of Namibia, north of the Etosha National Park. This means that the B1 motorway from Windhoek via Okahandja, Otjiwarongo, Otavi and Tsumeb is particularly busy.
A trip to Swakopmund or Henties Bay on the coast is also very popular. Others go camping in the countryside. Or visit Sossusvlei, where there is probably still water after the good rainfall of the past few weeks (see report on Namibian.org).
Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays in Namibia (see also the overview of Namibian public holidays in the Travel Advice section.
The authorities and many shops are closed over the Easter weekend. Supermarkets in the larger towns are usually open.
