Young Namibians Offered Apprenticeships In Germany

17 Nov 2023

Unemployment among the youth is topical in many developing and industrialised nations. Contributing to the situation is a skills gap. To literally “bridge the gap” Namibia's government investment authority joined up with the Goethe Institute in Namibia and introduced an apprenticeship programme for young Namibians in Germany.

Launching the programme on 14 November 2023, the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board (NIPDB), in partnership with the Goethe-Institut Namibia said that young Namibians between the ages of 18 and 25 years can apply for the German apprenticeship connect programme.

They must have a minimum school leaving certificate for Grade 10 and be prepared to live and work in Germany for the duration of their apprenticeship. Knowledge of the German language is an advantage.

The manager of the Goethe Institut Namibia, Dennis Schroeder, said Germany faces a significant shortage of apprentices.

“A recent survey found that 42 percent  of German companies were unable to fill all their apprenticeship positions,” he noted.

“The programme will address our country’s youth unemployment and will provide access to Germany’s dual apprenticeship model of practical and theoretical learning,” said Nangula Uaandja, the manager of the NIPDB. The valuable experience young Namibians gain while in Germany would benefit Namibia's economy when they return.
