This year's annual climate summit, starting on 30 November 2023, will take place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Namibia will display its pavilion on opening day.
President Hage Geingob arrived in Dubai on 28 November to participate in the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) and high-level events of the Global Stock-take (GST) under the Paris agreement of 2015.
This year’s ten-day long COP28 will discuss various topics, among them financing climate adaptation projects for developing countries and what more can be done to keep rising temperatures on Mother Earth in check.
On 1 December 2023, President Geingob will join other heads of state and government in a high-level Global Stock-take (GST) event, regarding technical assessments since 2015.
“Namibia is at an advanced stage with initiatives to start producing clean energy through green hydrogen to respond to the global challenges of climate change and meet global energy demand,” the spokesperson of the President, Alfredo Hengari, said.
“The summit will provide Namibia with an opportunity to showcase its ambition of becoming a green hydrogen superpower in the coming decade by positioning itself as an international exporter of green hydrogen.”
On the margins of the summit, President Geingob will participate in the summit of G-77 and China on climate change and will also attend an initial meeting on the Critical Raw Materials Club that is organised by the European Commission at the EU Pavilion of the COP28 on 2 December 2023. The EUC has signed agreements with several developing states, among them Namibia, to import critical metals like cobalt and lithium.
On the margins of COP28, President Geingob will hold meetings with the former Secretary General of the United Nations and current chairperson of the Centre for Global Adaptation, Ban Ki-Moon, as well as business leaders from Siemens Energy, Fortescue Future Industries regarding green hydrogen technology.
