The Great Karas Mountains are located in the south of Namibia, in between Keetmanshoop and Grunau, en-route to South Africa or further east to Botswana. The Karas region is the southernmost, and the driest area in Namibia.
There is a variety of game resident in the Karas Mountains, including kudu, springbok, gemsbok and ostrich. Smaller species such as rock dassies and the elusive steenbok, can also be viewed. There are a number of walking trails in the mountains and birdwatchers may catch a glimpse of the kori bustard, black eagle or rosy-faced lovebirds.
Visitors to the area may consider staying at the tranquil Goibib Mountain Lodge, not just to enjoy the scenic beauty of the mountains, but it is also ideally positioned as a base to explore the Fish River Canyon, Quiver Tree Forest, Brukkaros Volcanic Crater and Ai-Ais Hot Springs Spa.
