Introduction: The common scimitarbill (Rhinopomastus cyanomelas) inhabits both tropical and subtropical arid woodland. Observed usually singly or in pairs they roost in crevices or hollows against the bark of tree. Nest cavities are never used to roost.
Distribution: Common in Namibia, the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta.
Diet: Both sexes often forage in the same tree, landing low on the trunk and clambering around usuing the tail for balance whilst they search for food. Hanging upside down while probing bark and crevices are a feeding feature for the common scimitarbill. Eats mainly invertebrates including wasps, spiders, flies, flying ants, caterpillars, ants and their eggs and beetles.
Description: Cyanomelas is the Greek word for dark blue-black which refers to the plumage. Eyes are dark brown and legs and feet are black.
Breeding: Around 2 to 4 eggs are laid at daily intervals except for July and August. Incubation periods are around 13 to 14 days.
Size: 24 to 28cm.
Weight: 35g.
