Introduction: The long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus) is a large eagle-like buzzard that inhabits savannahs and semi-arid steppes.
Distribution: Mainly migrant to the Caprivi. Has also been recorded near Okahandja and Bullspoort, although not recently.
Diet: Hunts from perch to take small mammals especially rodents, reptiles and termites.
Description: Large hawk with short bill and large cere. Buteo is Latin for a falcon or a hawk. Rufinus is Latin for red or reddish.
Breeding: Extralimital. Non-breeder in Namibia.
Size: 65cm.
Weight: 1kg.
