Lesser Spotted Eagle

Introduction: Lesser spotted eagles (Aquila pomarina) inhabit open woodland and savannah and are absent from dense forest and mountainous regions. Their broad wings are adapted for soaring, a magnificent sight when flying with other raptors in thermals.

Distribution: Etosha National Park, Caprivi, Kaudom Game Park, Tsumkwe and other isolated north eastern populations.

Diet: Perch or ground forages for termites, chicks, small rodents and amphibians.

Description: Body and wing colouration dark or mid-brown. A feature is their 'stove-pipe' brown leggings. Has yellow toes.

Breeding: Palearctic breeding migrant.

Size: 65cm.

Weight: 1.5kg.

Wingspan: 1.6m
