Introduction: In addition to the large numbers of the greater flamingo at Walvis Bay, there are also some 33,000 lesser flamingos (Phoenicopterus minor) in the same location. Habitats include open, shallow wetlands, saline lakes and salt pans, coastal mudflats, sewage treatment works and small, ephemeral freshwater wetlands.
Distribution: Scattered population throughout southern, central and northern Namibia as well as Etosha National Park, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay Lagoon, Sandwich Harbour, Skeleton Coast, lower Orange River, Kaudom Game Park and Tsumkwe.
Diet: Wades in shallow water by day and night for cyanobacteria.
Description: Overall deep pink colouration, yellow eyes, deep crimson to maroon bill, greying pink to reddish pink legs and feet.
Breeding: A small mound of mud is built close to the water on a flooded salt pan where females lay just 1 egg (rarely 2) in January and February and incubated for up to 28 days. Eagles and vultures take chicks.
