Sossusvlei lodge

Sossusvlei Lodge is situated adjacent to Sesriem, on a 44,000ha private reserve just outside the entrances to both the Namib Naukluft Park and the dunes at Sossusvlei. This setting makes it the ideal destination for visitors wanting to explore this section of the Namib Desert, without having the longer early morning drive, associated with accommodation located further away.

The lodge blends in perfectly with the spectacular desert surrounds which bears testament to the outstanding eco-friendly design.

In the main complex area there is the reception, (with courtesy beverage bar) adventure centre, observation tower, dining and grill areas, a chlorinated fresh water swimming pool, (with pool towels) and bar. Also at reception is a guest telephone facility. The curio shop's stock includes books of the area, postcards, African art jewelry, lodge branded clothing and caps, films, camera batteries, sunglasses and sunscreen.

There is also a laundry facility here and all of the lights are powered by solar energy. At the adjacent Sesriem Camp Site, there is a small general dealer type shop, selling basic necessities, and a petrol station.

Sossusvlei Lodge offers a unique destination for both indoor and outdoor conferencing in Namibia. The conference centre has a seating capacity of 100, and is fully equipped with all the modern audio-visual aids. It is also proving to be a popular venue for product launches, team building workshops, not to mention weddings and other special functions.

Sossusvlei Lodge serves a continental or full English breakfast, a buffet or 'a la carte luncheon' and a sumptuous buffet dinner, including soup of the day, cold meats, fresh salads, a variety of breads and meats, poultry, vegetables and stir-fries. The evening meal is rounded off with an extensive selection of puddings, desserts, tarts, cheese/biscuits and hot/cold beverages. The bar serves an extensive range of Southern African wines, well-known Namibian and German beers and schnapps.

Accommodation at the lodge is in:

Rooms: 45 x units with the same standard layout. All of the units have adobe walls, tiled floors and canvas roofs. Every room sleeps two in adjoining three-quarter beds. They have an entrance hall, bathroom with shower/toilet/wash basin, a fan, wardrobe, (a personal electronic safe is located here) and a verandah with table and chairs. Above the en-suite bathrooms is a flat roof, from which you can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding area.

Family Rooms: 3 x Family Units are available with similar features to the rooms but with inter-leading doors between the bathrooms connecting the two units. Each unit has a private bathroom.

Many of their guests marvel at the desert beauty from a bird's eye view in a hot air balloon or by aircraft. A visit to The Adventure Centre is recommended. There is a wide variety of activities to enjoy in the area including Sossusvlei excursions, desert scenic flights, bush dinners, nature drives, sundowners, guided sunset walks, hot-air balloon flights and eco-quad biking.

Airstrip transfers to and from the lodge are available for guests of Sossusvlei Lodge.

Walking: It is perfectly safe to walk freely around Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, provided that contact with wild animals, snakes, scorpions and other reptiles is avoided.

Waterhole: Antelope, scavengers and other mammals frequently visit the waterhole.

Sossusvlei Excursions: An early start from the Lodge to enter the Namib-Naukluft Park at sunrise, while the temperature is still mild and when the dune contrasts are at their best. You will travel in one of our all-terrain URI Game viewer vehicles, custom-built in Namibia for the Lodge, with your own specially trained guide who will share all his knowledge of the area, the animals, the plant life and much more with you. Regular stops are made on the 60 kilometre drive down to the Vlei to gain information or take in the vistas. At Dune 45, the more energetic have the opportunity to climb to the upper ridge of the world's most photographed dune. Further along, a gradual 2,6 kilometre round-trip walk up to Dead Vlei is a must for the healthy visitors. Spend time in Sossusvlei before returning to the Lodge approximately 5 hours later in time for luncheon. Refreshments are provided on the trip.

Nature Drives: Guided nature drives in our comfortable all-terrain URI Game viewer vehicles on the 44 000 hectare expanse that make up our private reserve. You will experience a relaxing drive through pristine nature where Oryx and springbok wander freely on the property. Spectacular photographs present themselves at every turn during this excursion of approximately 4.5 hours. Refreshments are provided.

Sundowners: Depart from Sossusvlei Lodge in the late afternoon on a leisurely drive out onto the Lodge's private reserve. Watch the shadows lengthen as your guide takes you out to a panoramic location where sundowner drinks will be served as you relax and watch the spectacular sunset.

Eco-Quad Biking: A wonderful and different way to view the local surrounds. Exhilarating yet eco-friendly, the fixed quad biking trials have been meticulously laid out on the Lodge's private reserve so as not to interfere with the indigenous plant and animal life. Visitors follow the guide and may not deviate off the trails.

Quad-Bike Breakfast Run: Is for the person who wants to experience something different and is specifically geared towards those who still want to travel on to their next destination the same day with the trip departing around 15 minutes before sunrise. It follows the shortest route on easy terrain to the Tsauchab River and arrives at the destination in time to watch the sunrise. Once there, your Guide unpacks the picnic basket and sets a 'table' (of petrified mud which resembles a flat table top and even offers 'seats' too). This breakfast location is stunning with a 360° view of the rising sun over the mountains, on the dunes, on the golden grass plains and on the mountains... simply breathtaking! On completion of the breakfast, bikers follow a slightly different direct route back to the Lodge over easy terrain.

Desert Scenic Flights: A Cessna 210 light aircraft is permanently based on the Sossusvlei Lodge property along with an experienced pilot who also doubles as a trained "aerial" desert guide. A number of routes are available on request and include 40 minute trips to Sossusvlei and longer round-trip flights down to the coast. The latter excursion provides wonderful aerial photographs of the desert with its 'sea of dunes' as well as unforgettable views of the numerous shipwrecks along the "Skeleton Coast" of Namibia.

Ballooning over Sossusvlei: Drift over the dune fields at Sossusvlei and enjoy a champagne breakfast wherever the wind takes you.

Scenic Flights: Light aircraft regularly depart on scenic flights over Sossusvlei and its surroundings.

Barkworth, Clare

31 Jan 2015

Not really our cup of tea - rather large lodge but it was adequate. Pity we didn\'t have two nights in Sossus Dune Lodge

21 Aug 2014

Massive lodge by Namibian standards but we had a room right on the edge (thanks) so it felt still quite calm at the room.

Mondot, Jm

29 Aug 2011

Well situated at the entrance of the Sossusvlei park. Poor breakfast, but we spent only 1 night, is it usually different ?

Rowden, Virginia

11 Jun 2011

Another wonderful resort - exceptional service, beautiful accommodation and good dining (although we are not keen on buffets).

The setting of the accommodation was great. The dining facilities and food were great. One night here may have been sufficient.

Wilkinson, Colin

20 May 2013

Beautiful place and certainly well worth visiting - but the roads are shocking. I would advise anyone to rather fly there. I will next time.

15 Aug 2016

Great location and rooms. Service is OK. They have buffet lunches and dinner. There are vegetarian dishes available just not a lot of choices.

Grandini, Lorenzo

5 Aug 2012

Very nice place, excellent service, employees, accomodation, an oasis at the desert, very nice food, everything was great at Sossusvlei Lodge.

Murphy, Bernie

12 Sep 2014

Stood out from other accommodation as most like a `country club,` for better or worse. Comfortable rooms, but also many tourists on tour busses.

Griffiths, Peter

8 Jan 2014

I really did enjoy staying here. Very comfortable, luxury, good food, friendly staff. Beautiful country, a must for all people travelling in the region.

Zimmermann, Silke

8 Nov 2017

Very well organised, although home for many tourists, really good and fresh food, big and clean rooms, bathroom has been the best of our whole stay in Namibia

Holzapfel, Cedric

An absolutely wonderful setting. Accommodation really special, food and service brilliant. The balloon ride over the dunes was something to always be remembered.

Benocci, Massimo

21 Aug 2015

the room was good. good location, close to the park entrance. It has been fantastic have dinner under the stars. The food was very good, particular the meat and the noodles.

Van Nielen, Katja

30 Apr 2011

A well organised and pleasant place. Good food. Handy to have adventure center in-house and petrol station next door, and actually to be next door to the Sossusvlei park gate.

Grossmann,marc

21 Nov 2016

Only 500meters from the park entrance, room (without TV but this is not the point) and food were very good, but wi-fi area was limited, and the swimming pool was kind of small.

Salcedo, Alvaro

30 Jul 2013

Nice place to visit the dunes. Meals are buffet only but the grill options are superb. The rooms are getting a bit old but the feeling of being in a tent is nice. Very friendly staff.

Fournier, Claud-alain

4 Jun 2010

Nice rooms in separate units. Not too peacefull as they have tour busses staying there. Buffet is quite nice. I recommand the flight over the dune they offer at the Lodge, it's wonderfull.

Page, Alex

30 Mar 2014

A really nice place. Very comfortable and the family cabins were ideal for our purposes. The staff were very helpful especially those in the adventure centre. The food was excellent and varied.

Smith, Alayne

24 Aug 2011

We loved it there! Did the dune tour through their Adventure centre-was really worth it, hassle-free. Food was really good, stunning kudu steaks again and too many desserts (not sands, the pudding type)!

28 Sep 2014

2 things wrong receiving us no help with luggage and directions to room. Breakfast very poor lots off complaints for example no filling up of bacon, no one to eggs orders waited 15 minutes for service, etc

Bishop, Lee

28 Jul 2016

A great selection of game meats for dinners, which was nice. The staff were also helpful if you asked for advice on how and when to drive into sossusvlei. Very conveniently located just outside the gates to sesriem.

Hackman, Cat

11 Apr 2011

Due to it`s size it is not as personalized as the other places so I felt like we arrived at `resort` with a lot of tourists. At first I was disappointed with the rooms but then they grew on me. I wish the rooms had fridges.

Graber, Max

2 Sep 2014

Great views, especially since we took advice and got the cottages at the edge. But the sewage smell from the nearby campsite was offputting. Amazing buffet with different native meats to choose for dinner. Probably best choice of foods.

O'brien, Aileen

19 Oct 2017

Dreadful - this was not 'luxury' accommodation, no warm welcome here, found it quite basic, really poor customer service, very busy and staff not able to cope with numbers, hot food was poor, only advantage is location. Two nights was too long here, couldn't wait to leave it

Bourdelet, Jean

22 Apr 2015

Beautiful lodge with very good services and delicious food. Maybe a little bit expensive but at least the quality is there. Very nice to be so close to the entrance of the park to be able to go to the dunes early especially with young kids at it is getting really hot quickly.

Coates, Simon

13 Oct 2014

Excellent. We were lucky enough to be assigned cabins close to the main building and overlooking the water-hole. The lodge is in the perfect location for a morning visit to Sossusvlei. Very enjoyable evening game drive in the lodge grounds. Fantastic evening buffet with braai.

Shackley, Myra

23 Nov 2011

A splendid place but in retrospect we only needed 2 nights there instead of 3. Outstanding food and service and we liked our tented unit. The larger more hotel-style atmosphere suited us better than the smaller lodges. Had we wished to take trip, though, the range was quite limited.

Narciso, Bonnie

27 Jul 2013

The Sossusvlei Lodge was one of the most unique and interesting lodges that we stayed at during our visit to Namibia. The staff was wonderful and the food was out of this world. I would highly recommend it. It was close to the Namib Desert which is a must see while in Namibia. I loved it!!
