Serra Cafema Camp combines luxury and great service in undoubtedly the most remote camps in Namibia. It is only reachable in a three hour long light aircraft trip from Windhoek landing inland from the Atlantic Ocean and the Skeleton Coast. Subsequently the cool Atlantic winds help keep the camp cool even in summer. Enjoy peace and tranquillity with amazing scenery in the home of isolated Himba villages, one of the last true nomadic people in Africa.
The Kunene River is the only permanent source of water in this region and the river creates a lush oasis along it's banks, surrounded by rugged mountains and sand dunes. Serra Cafema is Portuguese and comes from the mountains to the north of the same name.
This small, rustic and peaceful camp can be found under the large, shady Albida trees. Serra Cafema has a small plunge pool, dining room and bar. There are set daily menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner and tea/coffee are available throughout the day.
Accommodation is in 9 raised, riverfront, fully-furnished, Meru style tents, with en-suite bathroom facilities. Each tent has a fan, mosquito nets and insect repellent is provided. There is a private deck, complete with comfy hammock, and it has breathtaking views that overlook the private wilderness. The honeymoon chalet has possibly the best views, but book early to get this chalet. Two chalets can be used together as a family unit.
Serra Cafema Camp is the ultimate African off-beat track and wilderness experience. Spend time in the breath-taking landscape of the Hartmann Valley to the south and game view desert-adapted wildlife, such as Oryx, herds of springbok, ostrich and even leopard.
Traverse sand dunes on 4x4 safaris, or float down the Kunene river on one of the camps boat trips, watching Kunene crocodiles basking on the river banks as you drift by.
For those who enjoy foot safaris, the remote mountain and river valley walking trails, will present a challenging, but safe pursuit. Many of their guests comment on how enjoyable these treks are.
Serra Cafema is often visited by the local Ovahimba. It gives guests an opportunity to learn about a completely different lifestyle and tradition.
Nature drives: Explore the breathtaking landscapes and traverse sand dunes in Hartmann's Valley in an open 4x4 vehicle. Springbok, oryx and ostrich graze and browse as you pass.
Quad-Biking: Travel in formation lead by your experienced guide to the dunes, in an environmentally-friendly quad-biking excursion. Not only is it great fun but the scenery is outstanding.
Boating: Look out for the Kunene crocs basking on the riverbanks.
Walking: The river valleys and waterfalls of the region provide some of most striking and dramatic scenery the country has to offer. Apart from the magnificent views, there is a variety of plants and wildlife to admire on the way.
Cultural tour: A visit to an authentic Himba village should top the list of any visit to the region. The lifestyle and traditions these nomads endure, especially the women and children, belong to the past but are a part of their future. Alternatively you might be fortunate enough to meet native Ovahimba families who often visit Serra Cafema.
Full day outings: A picnic lunch in a remote and peaceful location somewhere in the Marienfluss Valley is recommended.
An upmarket lodge and spa on the banks of the Kavango River. The only traditional luxury lodge on this stretch of river.
At Hakusembe River Lodge, visitors are introduced to the fascinating Kavango culture. This self-reliant community has turned their intimate connection to the land and river into remarkable displays of craftsmanship. With lush river-side gardens, and a beautifully translucent pool, guests can spend afternoons lounging and listening to the passing river. By late afternoon, they hop onboard a boat for a sunset cruise along the Okavango River with sparkling wine and the sound of the river way of life to guide them along the banks. This is the ideal location for a halfway stop between central Namibia and the farther Zambezi Region.
A few kilometers east of Rundu a nice functional lodge that more than adequately serves as an overnight stop while travelling through the Kavango and Zambezi region. The rooms, bar and restaurant area offer lovely views of the Kavango River.
Situated close to the Mahangu Park in west Caprivi - this is an excellent stop-over between Namibia, Maun (in Botswana) and the Victoria Falls.
Nambwa Lagoon Camp is situated on the lagoon side of Nambwa Island, within the heart of KAZA.
A rustic river side campsite and lodge offering excellent value for money. A lively bar and restaurant ensures this appeals to the younger or more socially inclined traveller.

Near the village of Divundu, this small but wonderfully managed lodge is a perennial favourite of ours. Lovely wooden chalets, with large decks overlook the river. Those wanting to experience the river can choose from fishing and sunset river cruises.

One of the best lodges for birders visiting Namibia - but also great for fishing, chilling or generally becoming part of the family (the family consists of a host of creatures including goats, otters and guinefowls all lovingly adopted by the owners).
