Hakusembe River Lodge enjoys a picturesque riverine setting ideal for self-drivers, families and those on a romantic honeymoon getaway in Namibia. As it is only 15km west of the northern Namibian town of Rundu it provides an ideal stopover for a couple of nights on the way to the Zambezi Region from Etosha National Park or other ares in central / northern Namibia.
Guests can look forward to a warm and jolly welcome from their hosts after a hard, dusty day's drive. The thatched main lodge area has a reception, restaurant and bar. Enjoy dinner on the large deck after a champagne 'sunset' cruise. An English breakfast, light lunch, and the more traditional fare of fish, venison or game steaks are served for dinner. The lodge pride themselves on their 'gordon bleu', specialty cooking, and a buffet style service will be introduced for larger groups. There is also disabled access, a laundry service and an Internet connection.
Accommodation is in either river facing en-suite bungalows or a floating chalet. Children of all ages are welcome here. There are:
Rooms: 24 rooms set between large acacia trees and overlooking the Kavango River. Air-conditioning, a fridge, fan, mosquito nets, a tea/coffee station and an in-room safe are standard
Family Rooms: 2 family units, one that sleeps 2 adults and 4 children and 1 that sleeps 7 people
Activities from Hakusembe River Lodge include guided river safaris, an early morning guided bird watching walk, (over 400 species have been spotted locally), bream and tiger-fishing, (you can have your tiger fish mounted by the lodge!!) and the very popular champagne sunset cruises. Water ski-ing can also be organized on request.
Fishing: Set out for a full day boat tour on the Kavango River fishing for the renowned tigerfish amongst other. Skipper and fishing equipment provided.
Birding: Many birds frequent the river themselves searching for fish and insects as well as nesting in riverine vegetation. Cruise the waterways for approximately 1.5 hours.
Sunset Champagne Cruise: Watching the sun set over the still waters of the Kavango River is an ideal way to end your day. Join other travellers and enjoy a drink and a snack as evening falls.
Picnic safari: Cross the border into Watu, Angola for lunch on this 2 hour trip.
Canoe Safari: Paddle up the river and enjoy a picnic lunch en-route.
Cultural tour: Visit the Living Museum - an active and authentic way of presenting ancient traditional culture. Ukumwe, a local group of drummers and dancers, will perform for you during or after dinner.
An upmarket lodge and spa on the banks of the Kavango River. The only traditional luxury lodge on this stretch of river.
A few kilometers east of Rundu a nice functional lodge that more than adequately serves as an overnight stop while travelling through the Kavango and Zambezi region. The rooms, bar and restaurant area offer lovely views of the Kavango River.
Situated on the banks of the river (hence the name) in Rundu.
Situated close to the Mahangu Park in west Caprivi - this is an excellent stop-over between Namibia, Maun (in Botswana) and the Victoria Falls.
Refreshingly, and surprisingly for the area, this lodge does not have the word 'River' as part of its name. Do not be misled it is situated on the banks of the river opposite the Caprivi Game Park (Bwabwata National Park).
A rustic river side campsite and lodge offering excellent value for money. A lively bar and restaurant ensures this appeals to the younger or more socially inclined traveller.
Close to Popa Falls and the Mahango Reserve this lodge offers stunning river views.
Close to the Popa Falls (a series of rapids on the Kavango River), this rest camp was renovated in 2013
On the Kavango River banks this lodge offers plenty of water based activities.
Near the village of Divundu, this small but wonderfully managed lodge is a perennial favourite of ours. Lovely wooden chalets, with large decks overlook the river. Those wanting to experience the river can choose from fishing and sunset river cruises.
On a beautiful plot of indigenous plants and trees overlooking the river.
Up-market luxury safari camp in a spectacuar setting overlooking the Kunene River. A range of activities are included and a highlight is a visit to the local Himba community.
One of the best lodges for birders visiting Namibia - but also great for fishing, chilling or generally becoming part of the family (the family consists of a host of creatures including goats, otters and guinefowls all lovingly adopted by the owners).
A small lodge a short distance west of Rundu. The rooms have river views and guests can choose from a range of activities.
These are honest reviews, both good and bad, from our travellers who visited this property.
Very beautiful, great bird watching trip. But not near any game parks to see larger animals and not near hippos
A bit overpriced for what we got- we stayed in the floating home on the river and it was not a great experience.
Great lodge and wonderful location. Sunset cruise was somewhat disappointing after boat trips on the Chobe River.
The food was VERY GOOD! And the platform they have over the river is great. We saw one of the most beautiful sunsets there!
really enjoyed this place. The staff were great and the river cruise was enjoyable saw a lot of birds which I enjoy.Food tasty
Beautiful lodge, great location, lovely staff - who took us on an impromptu boat trip to see a croc. Great food in a lovely restaurant.
This was a good stopping off place and it is difficult to assess it as we just spent one night here. The accommodation was very good as well as the food.
A very nice place. We lived in the floating chalet, which was a wonderful experince. Both owner and staff were friendly and nice. We would like to go there again.
This was a very pleasant surprise. The location on the Okavango River, the grounds as well as the whole facility was fantastic. The rooms were very comfortable and beautifully furnished.
We were double booked but staff sorted the problem with no fuss and put us in 2 cottages. Relatively upmarket, with big restaurant and bar. Trips on the river were not operating because of low river levels, which was disappointing.
was our surprise - we knowed this lodge from a former stay - TOP level service - complete renewing - 6 Top chalets - 1-6 in the river front ; 7-12 behind 2nd row. We stayed in Nr. 1 - modern - large space - AC;new restaurant with open deck - excellent dinner - top range.
Very relaxing & we could easily have spent a couple of nights there. The setting on the Okavango River is beautiful. The rooms were nice. The food was good & they catered well for the gluten free. A lovely sundowner cruise on the river. We could easily have spent a couple of nights there.
A cool place to explore the Caprivi strip. If you're a bird-watcher, this place would be paradise. The number of different types of cool birds that we saw was unbelievable. Be sure to bring ear plugs if you want to sleep at night as the bird-life apparently stays up all night chittering away.
