Desert camp

Desert Camp is situated on the 40,000ha Taleni Africa private reserve. Wild and dangerous animals roam freely around the reserve and may be encountered at any time. It is only four kilometres away from Sossusvlei Lodge, which is by the entrance gate to Sossusvlei. (Namib Naukluft Park.) It is an ideal destination for tourists who want to self-cater amongst the more expensive lodges of the area, and to self-drive into the dunes of one of Namibia's most famous tourist attractions, the sand dunes of Sossusvlei.

The camp itself nestles under centuries old camel thorn trees, and has a 360° view over the surrounding desert landscape and mountains. The impressive dunes of the Namib Desert are never far away at Desert Camp.

In the central communal area, there is a reception, bar with large-screen television, swimming pool and 2 x communal shared 'Bomas' with wash-up facilities and public toilets. The lodge is wheelchair friendly. Meal packs, booking meals at the nearby Sossusvlei Lodge, firewood/firelighters, eating and cooking utensils can be obtained here if required. Wi-Fi connection is at the main building.

A shop, Internet cafe, Wi-Fi facility, fuel and service station are available at the nearby Sossus Oasis.

There are 20 self-catering accommodation units, sited either side of the communal area. They are equipped with twin beds, a kitchen sink for washing up, an under the counter bar fridge, and a 2 plate stove. Each unit has power points for hairdryers and shavers, (220V) as well as an external power point. A maximum of 2 adults and 2 children, under 12 yrs of age, are permitted per unit. They have their own braai and outdoor seating area, and individual vehicle parking outside the front door.

There are 2 wheelchair friendly units accessible from a cemented path. They have no steps and are fitted with handles in the bathroom for easy access. The facilities are similar to all of the other self-catering units.

Guests of Desert Camp can hire a storage box. It has eating utensils for a maximum of 4 people and a selection of other cooking utensils may be hired from reception. (A deposit is required.)

A starter packs comprise of a selection of meat, vegetables, salads, bread, condiments, cheese and beverages. They must be ordered from reception before 18h00 the previous evening, for collection the following day.

All meals can be booked at the nearby Sossusvlei Lodge though, for those who do not wish to self-cater.

Sossusvlei Desert Camp has its own walking trail. Trekkers are advised to only follow this route, (which starts at the main parking area) and to avoid contact with wild animals, snakes, scorpions etc. Additional self catering accommodation is now available at the new Desert Quiver Camp, which is situated on the same property.

Walking: It is perfectly safe to walk freely around Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, provided that contact with wild animals, snakes, scorpions and other reptiles is avoided.

Sossusvlei Excursions: An early start from the Lodge to enter the Namib-Naukluft Park at sunrise, while the temperature is still mild and when the dune contrasts are at their best. You will travel in one of our all-terrain URI Game viewer vehicles, custom-built in Namibia for the Lodge, with your own specially trained guide who will share all his knowledge of the area, the animals, the plant life and much more with you. Regular stops are made on the ±60 kilometre drive down to the Vlei to gain information or take in the vistas. At Dune 45, the more energetic have the opportunity to climb to the upper ridge of the world's most photographed dune. Further along, a gradual 2,6 kilometre round-trip walk up to Dead Vlei is a must for the healthy visitors. Spend time in Sossusvlei before returning to the Lodge approximately 5 hours later in time for luncheon. Refreshments are provided on the trip.

Nature Drives: Guided nature drives in our comfortable all-terrain URI Game viewer vehicles on the 44 000 hectare expanse that make up our private reserve. You will experience a relaxing drive through pristine nature where Oryx and springbok wander freely on the property. Spectacular photographs present themselves at every turn during this excursion of approximately 4 hours. Refreshments are provided.

Sundowners: Depart from Sossusvlei Lodge in the late afternoon on a leisurely drive out onto the Lodge's private reserve. Watch the shadows lengthen as your guide takes you out to a panoramic location where sundowner drinks will be served as you relax and watch the spectacular sunset.

Eco-Quad-Biking: A wonderful and different way to view the local surrounds. Exhilarating yet eco-friendly, the fixed quad biking trials have been meticulously laid out on the Lodge's private reserve so as not to interfere with the indigenous plant and animal life. Visitors follow the guide and may not deviate off the trails.

Quad-Bike Breakfast Run: This for the person who wants to experience something different and is specifically geared towards those who still want to travel on to their next destination the same day with the trip departing around 15 minutes before sunrise. It follows the shortest route on easy terrain to the Tsauchab River and arrives at the destination in time to watch the sunrise. Once there, your Guide unpacks the picnic basket and sets a 'table' (of petrified mud which resembles a flat table top and even offers 'seats' too). This breakfast location is stunning with a 360° view of the rising sun over the mountains, on the dunes, on the golden grass plains and on the mountains... simply breathtaking! On completion of the breakfast, bikers follow a slightly different direct route back to the Lodge over easy terrain.

Desert Scenic Flights: A Cessna 210 light aircraft is permanently based on the Sossusvlei Lodge property along with an experienced pilot who also doubles as a trained "aerial" desert guide. A number of routes are available on request and include 40 minute trips to Sossusvlei and longer round-trip flights down to the coast. The latter excursion provides wonderful aerial photographs of the desert with its 'sea of dunes' as well as unforgettable views of the numerous shipwrecks along the "Skeleton Coast" of Namibia.

Ballooning over Sossusvlei: Drift over the dune fields at Sossusvlei and enjoy a champagne breakfast wherever the wind takes you.

Scenic Flights: Light aircraft regularly depart on scenic flights over Sossusvlei and its surroundings.

Rinaldi, Mandy

24 Jun 2011

We loved this camp for its fabulous views and facilities. It`s more glamping (glamorous camping) than camping. One can self cater in style!

Groheer, Swantje

23 Mar 2012

Very friendly staff in a stunningly beautiful location with an excellent breafast at the lodge and very good additional service for self catering.

What a treat this stop over was. Great location, well cared for. A must stay if you are visiting the Sesriem area. The view from your tented chalet is awesome.

Lybeck, Stig Olof

12 Apr 2016

Very nice place only missed ac as it was up in the 40's in the afternoons. Sossusvlei is not worth more than 2 nights. B&D at Sossusvlei Lodge 5 km up the road.

Sumich, Kim

18 Dec 2013

Our second favourite accomodation. Good value braai food can be bought from the Camp as it was a lot cheaper than the service station. Really liked Desert Lodge

Vermaak, Ilse

5 Nov 2009

Very good service at the desert camp. Accommodation very nice, the fan is great, it was clean and I liked the soap dispensers in both the showers and kitchenette.

Tomasina, Giorgio

De Bruin, Justine

19 May 2017

Very comfortable and neat - nice to rent the kitchen box and braai for a change! We bought a few things in Solitaire but also found the Sesriem store at the garage very useful.

Smith, Austin

5 Sep 2010

very very nice place - very relaxing and wonderful base from which to head into sossusvlei. Accommodation was wonderful, bathroom amazing, views spectacular - best place of trip.

Blondiaux, Marie-astrid

6 Jun 2013

Beautiful and well-situated camp. As it was self-catering, they had all the material (incl BBQ and wood) and utensils at disposal. As everywhere in the desert, the pool is freezing!

9 Mar 2012

absolutely amazing! awesome location, awesome view, awesome accommodations, can't say enough good things about the place! this place included breakfast and dinner and we didn't know that.

Hoke, Steven

30 Jul 2015

Good value for money, exactly what we expected. We took our meals at the Sossusvlei Lodge and they were excellent. We especially liked the location of the Desert Camp, just 5 minutes to the national park.

Buchert, Thomas

18 Jun 2011

friendly staff, good service, wonderfull location, but ther should be heating facilities during the winter. In the early morning hours the temperatur in the tent was 2 degrees celsius. We love this place :-))

Verstraete, Kris

25 Jul 2012

Lovely luxury tents, we had the bad luck that there was lots of wind and we did`'t sleep so well, best breakfast that we had, self catering is good but the rent for the  cooking set was expensive we thought!

Vahlhaus, Juergen

2 May 2013

Good camp with nice view close to the park entrance. Heavy and spacious tents, small pool with bar, excellent choice of food, e.g. game, at the neighboring lodge if you choose to have breakfast and dinner there.

10 Oct 2009

Very nice place, very friendly and professional staff, the perfect location to visit the Sossusvlei, comfortable and clean rooms, Braai package arrived in time as ordered, we would recommand this place to anyone.

Marescotti, Enrico

10 Nov 2013

perfect...would have liked to learn there`s a lodge with different type of accomodation linked to Desert Camp, with no need to drive for breakfast and dinner. Amazing locations and accomodation anyway, really enjoyed it.

Waddington, Doreen

18 May 2013

We enjoyed this experience and found it comfortable. Wonderful views at sunset. All the items specified on the list for the kitchen were not in the box but when we drew their attention to it it was rectified without a problem

Convery, Hejira

8 Nov 2009

The luxury tents were absolutely amazing! 360 degree views of country we've never seen in our lives and excellent proximity to food at the Lodge and sightseeing in the Namib Dessert. We hope to go back - had an excellent time!

9 Oct 2009

Really enjoyed our stay here, pretending to camp, liked that you could order uncooked food at reception that you can grill yourself on the BBQ. Very nice level of accomodation and the breakfast basket was exceptionally nice...

Poppe, Rudy

22 Jul 2011

In July really cold at night and in the morning but a unique location and luxury tents with a great view. Buffet in Sossusvlei lodge was outstanding. But you have to register at Desert camp it self and NOT at the Sossusvlei lodge

Strange, Paul

10 Nov 2014

We really enjoyed our night here - the braai was really good value. If you don`t want to be disturbed by the early leavers for Sossusvlei then book a tent furthest away from the entrance - we had number 1 and didn`t hear anyone leaving.

Janson, Candida

1 Jul 2011

We loved this place! Great location, away from the gates, great accommodation. Loved being able to cook on the braai in the evenings - great food delivery service (you should tell people about this - we only found out on their website).

Gatwood, Colin

20 Nov 2011

Wonderful place to stay. Unfortunately the person on reception gave us the wrong information re park opening so we arrived to find we could have entered much earlier which we would have preferred- however, we had a good time and saw lots

Carnie, Sheena

4 Jan 2012

LOVED Desert Camp! Such a beautiful outlook, very well equipped, very close to Sossusvlei and the pool was wonderful on the very hot days. Only trouble was with a very persistent jackal who wanted to scavenge while we ate dinner on the verandah.

Lohneiss, Susanne

20 May 2011

Beautiful location and the tents are very sturdy and well equipped. Although it is difficult to sleep when there is an all-night thunderstorm.. The only downside is that having to drive to the Lodge for breakfasts and dinners is a bit of a pain.

Frey, Michael

1 Apr 2013

Unique and very comfortable although we hit a hot spell and the tent was a bit hot until late at night. The dinners(which initially we didn't know were included in our booking) at the Sossusvlei Lodge were food we had in Namibia.

Joshi, Nikhil

31 Aug 2010

Friendly staff in this secluded yet posh camp. The tents are luxurious, and with the bar and available foodstuffs ordering, this place is a great place to spend a night or two outside of Sossusvlei. Hiking trails around the area offer great views at sunset.

Hardiman, John

9 Nov 2012

We were very impressed as to the high standards at the Desert Camp, all the Staff were very friendly and helpful,we had the feeling that we were welcome here, the quality of the food at the Sossusvlei Lodge was excellent, and we left with a tear in our eyes.

Sullivan, Robert

3 Jul 2016

We really enjoyed Desert Camp and our stay here was one of the highlights of our trip. The quiet location was wonderful and we loved having our own braai and cooking our own food without having to pack it all up and bring with us. The staff there were very efficient and friendly.

Robinsons, Paul

7 Apr 2011

A fantastic location - we have never 'camped' in such luxury! A nice pool and bar made for a very relaxing time and the food in the lodge was superb with a wide choice. The only downside was the approach road to Desert Camp which was badly rippled and neeeded extra time and care.

Eldridge, Russell

14 May 2012

Lovely place. Good location near the park gate. But like most accommodation in Namibia, it was overpriced for what you got. One receptionist was surly and indifferent and blew his nose on his fingers while talking with us. But another receptionist was extremely helpful and friendly.

Sesriem is situated at the intersection of the C27 road from Helmeringhausen and the D826 which brings traffic in from Solitaire in the north and Maltahöhe in the south when it joins with the C19. The entrance gate to Desert Camp is located on the left hand side of the D826 road, ±8 kilometres from the T-junction intersection with the C19.
