Alternative space

The Alternative Space B&B in Swakopmund is run by Frenus, the architect, and his non-architect wife, Sibylle. Years ago, Sibylle fell in love with the Alternative Space, and she never left again for her native Germany.

The Alternative Space was established during colonial times, as the first and only alternative art gallery, in which anti-colonial and anti-apartheid artist could exhibit fine art and photography. Providing a place to sleep to interested people was a natural progression in the life of the gallery.

With its extensive collection of Namibian art and photography, liberally exhibited in all the rooms, white washed walls, beautiful gardens with green lawns, palm trees, banana and olive trees, the Alternative Space atmosphere is conducive of friendship, sensuality and romance. Excellent evenings are often spent around the open fire in the cave-like communal lounge. Should you get Frenus going, he will most enthusiastically explain to you the socio-political position of a patriotic African, and the sheer magic of life in Africa.

Sibylle always welcomes her guests with a bottle of champagne. With only four individually designed and decorated non smoking en-suite rooms, each and every guest is assured of her special attention. Sibylle's motto is that every little detail is important, and nothing is ever a problem. Her philosophy is most noticeable in the outstanding buffet breakfast with all the fresh German delicacies, that can be enjoyed at leisure from 7 till noon.

The Alternative Space speaks of life being lived as an exquisite and exciting art form. Frenus and Sibylle would love to meet you, and share the magic...

The Alternative Space is NOT RECOMMENDED for those that find pictures of nudity, or mixed race relationships, offensive.

Whelan, Rebecca

6 Oct 2011

This is a wonderful place to stay in Swakopmund, we were made to feel very welcome and given lots of information about things to do in the town. The breakfast is really great and the whole atmosphere of the place is lovely.

Kidd, Tara

27 Jul 2009

amaxing, very "alternative" - some people might feel uncomfortable as lots of erotic art on the walls; such friendly hosts, will drive you into town etc, the rooms are luxurious and very "sensual" - outdoor baths, swings etc

Centrih, Tina

22 Aug 2016

The owners are very nice and friendly. We only spend one night there and only had breakfast there but it was delicious and a lot of variety in food choices. The whole guest house is an amazing place. I would recommend further.

Kessler, James

9 Jan 2016

Perhaps my overall favorite lodging on the trip, in large part due to the hosts - I learned an incredible amount about the history of Namibia and Swakopmund from Frenus. The rooms and interior gardens were also warm and inviting.

Dhruv, Sharma

15 Aug 2016

Great place, very friendly, enjoyed the lounge with fireplace and also the help-yourself-breakfast. Frenus was very nice, we had a good conversation with him. Our room was a bit cold, but we did have enough blankets and hot water.

Egee, Benoit

20 Jun 2011

To be recommended : very interesting and particular hotel. The athomsphere and the contact we had with the managers/holders of this hotel were also very nice. They really help you understand their city, their country, their culture.

Todaro, Andrea

22 Jul 2019

Very particular b&b but very interesting. A good and "alternative" solutions for visit Swakopmund. The hosts have been very friendly and give us a lot of advice. Only one remark: we stayed in winter and the rooms in the night were very cold!

Joshi, Nikhil

31 Aug 2010

Though it may be striking at first, Alternative Space is a one-of-a-kind living space, with a library, full lounge, complete breakfast service, and otherworldly rooms. Definitely worth a visit, it is an unforgettable experience in Swakopmund.

Overvelde, Berry

8 Oct 2009

At first sight looks kind of quirky, but with excellent and friendly owners, great rooms, and a wide choice for breakfast. On the downside: we knew that it's on the edge of town, but still the walking distance surprised us a little (pretty far from town).

9 Mar 2012

very interesting place and the people were extremely friendly. it was such a cool setup. the artwork on the walls weren't too bad, but the photographs made my daughter and i a little uncomfortable especially when we met his wife, and she was the subject...

Gray, Robert

13 Jul 2017

Great place to stay in Swakopmund. The owners are really nice, welcoming and informative people. Rooms were excellent, especially with the heated blankets, as Swakopmund can get cold at night. Breakfast was very impressive with a great selection available.

Shah, Gautam

17 Dec 2017

While Swakopmund has little to offer, we were very happy with this B&B. Very cute, extremely comfortable, fabulous shower, and a very kind and gentle host. If there was any reason to stay in Swakopmund for a little while, we would have been very happy here.

Sincup, John

3 Jun 2013

Friendly helpful people and we enjoyed the quirkiness. We had the room next to the communal area that was large and comfortable. Very quiet as there was only one other guest for one night of our stay but not sure what it would be like if full. A pleasant stay.

Corteel, Trui

12 Aug 2016

The name of the B&B says it all: alternative.... We liked it very much. Comfortable room, nicely decorated, cosy shared living with fire place, very good "help yourself" breakfast with everything available you can think of, welcoming hosts (Frenus & Cybille), ....

Hermínio, Inês

20 Dec 2017

Really alternative space, but it was fun! However it's not a regular place to stay and it works on a different basis (bathroom in the middle of the room for example), so it's a good idea to inform people of that before going, since maybe not everyone is ok with it.

24 Aug 2017

Quiet location on the edge of town, off road parking, original architecture makes for individual rooms and a large atrium. Lots of space for kids to explore, including a library with some surprising literature. Use of a well equipped kitchen. Quirky but very friendly hosts.

Moate, Nicky

30 May 2014

Brilliant guest house. We really loved the relaxed atmosphere. Our room was really nice and the communal area is very comfortable. A bit of a walk into town but Frenus took us the first time so we knew where to go. All information is provided in the room. Really enjoyed this place.

Coming from Windhoek on Sam Nujoma Avenue, take the first road on the left after the railway line down Aukas Street, first left again down Libertine Amathila Street and then second left down Anton Lubowski Street. The Alternative Space is on your right on the corner of Dr Alfons Weber St.
