Canyon lodge

Canyon Lodge is situated in the 1260 square kilometre, privately owned Gondwana Canyon Park. It is only 20kms from the main viewpoint of Fish River Canyon and is built from natural materials, including local rock and thatch roofs. The lodge is an ideal starting point for visits to the Fish River Canyon.

The Canyon Lodge's main area lies in the shelter of a granite hilltop, and the lodge itself has been built amongst enormous boulders, designed to blend in with the natural environment. The reception, an indoor restaurant and the bar area can be found here. There is a safe in reception for the safekeeping of valuables. As the building has been constructed by using mostly local stone, the interior is cool.

The farmhouse has been decorated with various farm implements, evoking memories of the pioneering farming days. Guests can relax on the shaded terrace, or laze beside the swimming pool. Gaze at the Fish River Canyon's incredible scenery whilst enjoying a sundowner on the top of the lodge's own mountain.

An old farmhouse, originally built in 1908 by three Bavarian brothers, has been restored to serve as the Canyon Lodge Restaurant. It has a magnificent view of the canyon landscape, which makes dining in the restaurant a truly unforgettable experience. Light lunches can be ordered from their 'a la carte' menu and in the evening, hearty game dishes and scrumptious side dishes from the buffet are available.

Spaced evenly amongst the tall weather-beaten granite boulders are 30 thatched, natural stone and wood bungalows. All units are equipped with comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and mosquito nets.

Activities include unguided morning hikes, Canyon and scenic drives and a guided sunset walk. Take in the superb scenery in this haunting, arid landscape.

This tranquil lodge is an excellent base to explore the wonders of Namibia's Fish River Canyon.

Excellent lodge! We were fortunate to get a very private chalet and enjoyed every minute of our stay.

Lodge and rooms were very nice. Bed and breakfast was o.k. Unfortunately there was no mobile-phone-reception.

Very good overall. Chalets cleverly built to include parts of the boulders. Need more loungers and umbrellas at the pool because mostly too hot in full sun.

Very good, we liked our lodge but would have been less happy with some of the others closer to the main building. Ours had an excellent view and few neighbours.

Beautiful setting and friendly staff. Shame it`s quite big (30 huts)as you then lose the more individual approach - e.g. groups stay overnight there and buffet dinners

Perfect setting - although little disapponted about the selected bungalow - there is wide range with perfect views up to poor views - out location was acceptable, but...

I loved the chalet and the place looks beautiful. Again a unique place that has to be experienced. The let down here was the food, very average. The place looks good though.

Die lodge is voorwaar `n oase in die woestyn die grasperke tussen die huisies was `n verrassing en die perde wat daar rond wei was oulik. Die chef hier het vir my man spesiaal brood gebak.

Our hostess Steffi was excellent and the kitchen produced excellent fare. However we were shocked by the abrupt and brutal upbraiding of one waitress by the `head chef` for putting out the wrong glasses.

Good location and setting but the room was extremely cold. In general, most of the accomodation did not provide any sort of heating being more oriented to the warmer high season; something perhaps they need to think about

What a dramatic spot the girls had a separate cabin with giant boulders making up part of their bedroom and bathroom walls they loved it. Very comfortable and I`m very glad we spent 2 nights there. The food was quite good too.
