Doro Nawas Camp is a striking lodge set in a stunning Damaraland location. The elevated site supplies endless and spectacular views of the beautiful Etendeka Mountains and red sandstone cliffs of Twyfelfontein. Self-drive tourists in Namibia can plan their own trips to local tourist attractions or hop on a guided tour. Expect attentive service, excellent food and knowledgeable guides.
The camp has built up a good reputation for itself due mainly to the close working relationship between them and the local community who partly own it. All of the staff at the lodge come from the surrounding villages and have been specially trained to fill specific roles and positions.
Lovingly prepared wholesome meals are served in either the indoor or outdoor rooftop dining areas. There is also a pool area, and bar and full laundry service. The curio shop and small gallery, lead to a picturesque courtyard and staircase to the roof, a tranquil and cracking site for a sundowner, nightcap, or spot of stargazing. It is not uncommon, for the lodge manager to join you on the roof, giving you the benefit of his knowledge of various constellations and galaxies with his laser pointer!
Guests will be accommodated in one of the camp's 16 chalets. They have all been built from a combination of a stone base and canvas walls, supported on wooden posts, which also prop up the thatched roof. Each chalet is of an open-plan design, with a large bedroom, a double bed, a couple of comfortable, padded wicker chairs, and a ceiling fan.
Sectioned off from the bedroom is the flush toilet, shower, and twin washbasins, each with it's own large mirror. The luxury amenities continue with complementary shampoo, body lotion and hand cream are provided, not to mention a couple of big towels. There is a large set of sliding glass doors, that open out onto a veranda. Guests can take an outdoor shower, and then relax and unwind on the deck, whilst admiring the terrific views of the magnificent environment.
The spacious chalets are lovely and cool during those hot summer days. It is also possible on the warmer evenings, to wheel the beds out of the rooms, and enjoy a night under the stars. Power is supplied to the lodge from a generator.
Activities revolve around the game found in and around the Haub River Valley, that occasionally fill with floodwater in the rainy season; a favourite being a guided 4x4 trip to track desert-adapted elephants. Many of their guests also head out on a fascinating expedition to the local rock art site at nearby Twyfelfontein, with some of the most renowned San art engravings in Namibia, which usually calls in at the Petrified Forest. There is also a walking trail in the vicinity of the lodge, which can be done with or without a guide.
Doro Nawas Camp. A luxury safari experience, whilst creating a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the economic empowerment of the local community.
Desert-adapted elephant: The most successful way of tracking desert-adapted elephants is on a guided 4WD trip. Your team leader will normally lead you into the Huab River Valley (weather permitting) and although early sightings are possible, expect to explore the region for a couple of hours before contact.
Twyfelfontein: Enjoy a guided 4x4 safari to the Bushman rock art at Twyfelfontein, which also takes in the Petrified Forest and the Organ Pipes as well.
Walking: There are a number of trails in the vicinity of the lodge. Take a guide if the local flora and fauna is of particular interest, or simply enjoy the beautiful environment by yourselves.
This small lodge is located between Outjo and Khorixas - it was one of the first guest farms opened in Namibia.
Situated in the tiny town of Uis, this lodge acts as a gateway to the Brandberg Mountain and other parts of the Erongo Region. The owner, Basil, is a bastion of the local community and a font of knowledge on the area.
We are absolutely convinced that this is where Nelly the Elephant decided to live, after deciding to run away from the circus! A bit run down - but in an excellent location.
Small private lodge consisting of thatched domed bungalows scattered amongst large granite boulders. It is well situated near Twyfelfontein and several other major Damaraland attractions.
Named after the abundant Mopane Trees found in the area, Damara Mopane Lodge is part of a well established lodge group, known for quality lodges at reasonable prices
This camp was started by Wilderness Safaris and is now managed by the local community. Expect luxury, desert elephants and rhino.
Situated in the town of Khorixas, this lodge may not have the most scenic setting but offers reasonable accommodation at good prices.
A fairly basic establishment just outside the town of Khorixas.
Private campsites in a beautiful setting.
One of the most luxurious lodges in the area - accommodation is in luxury tents or more 'solid' suites.
Twyfelfontein Country Lodge is much more than just accommodation; it is a destination in itself.
Close to the Vingerklip rock formation and offering exciting views of the Ugab Plains.
The Vingerklip is a 35m high finger like rock structure - this popular and well equipped lodge has two swimming pools and apart from being close to Vingerklip is in close proximity to Twyfelfontein, Burnt Mountain, Petrified Forest and other wonders of Damaraland.
These are honest reviews, both good and bad, from our travellers who visited this property.
Very nice accommodation with very friendly and helpful staff. Also very different. A very good experience.
ask for a hut that faces the sunrise. You can just open the large doors and watch it from your bed. Loved it.
This was our favourite; we loved it. Amazing staff, beautiful lodge, loved dining and sleeping under the stars.
Wonderful accommodation, including that they arranged a (great!) elephant drive just to accommodate our tight schedule!
Doro Nawas was one of the best Lodges we stayed at! The staff was so friendly and happy, the accommodation was perfect :)
great lodge, exceptional staff (singing after dinner), good game drive, delicious food. everything perfect! (we loved the outdoor shower!)
They might clean out the pool? a tad slimy on the sides. Sleeping outdoors was a delight. Theodore and Fiona amazing waitresses and hostesses
Fantastic lodge, incredible view from the lunch deck and fantastic guide who took us on an elephant trekking tour although we booked it last minute.
Absolutely amazing stay - the rooms/tents are perfect with wonderful views and luxurious interiors. We loved every minute. The bush dinner was also a highlight!
Marvellous location! Bungalows magnificent out & in! Quality and chance of kind of the food sufficient(nearly!). Service & professionality of the staff so & so.
Beautiful lodge, very relaxed stay. A little disappointed about the almost too laid back atmosphere, especially concerning the staff, burnt eggs for breakfast...
Another exceptional place. Poolside service needs attention. Local ranger exceptional but there could be a communication problem with foreigners. We are South African
Amazing looking place. The highlight was the outdoor dinner in the desert. A bit pricy and the $1100R for a 3 hr drive was high. Paid $675R for a 3 hr drive in Sossusvlei
Highlight was the staff but otherwise food was basic (strange menu), accommodation and lodge was basic and could be greatly improved upon, overpriced - Mowani was far superior
The best in our trip. Willderness Safaris has a good feed-back and it`s real. Outstanding and upmarket lodge. Kind reception, comfortable chalet with view, safaris, excellent cooking. Worth for the price.
Beautiful location. Very large and comfortable rooms with large deck. Breakfast good. Dinner portions small and service somewhat unprofessional at dinner, but the help eager to do the right thing. Pleasant stay.
We had our concerns as we drove up to this place, it looked rather forbidding at first sight. But it was fantastic! Amazing room with heartstopping view, friendly staff, good food. Would like to have stayed longer.
Wonderful location! The welcoming was a bit less professional than in Ongava (they did not explain that we could sleep outside the first night), but this might explain why it is less expensive. Food was very good as well.
Worth it`s price ! Employees always smiling and helpful. Big nice rooms with sight on the bush. Very good food. Tours organisation excellent. Excellent atmosphere. Very good food. Everything excellent, you have for your money.
Great location! Beautiful rooms. The service was very friendly though a bit casual. We enjoyed this but some people might prefer a bit more professional. Too many groups for our liking, but the place makes a visit worth it despite this.
Excellent place, well thought through (except hot water, which not hot in the evening, when the sun is down), great food, very well presented. The whole place is just beautiful, which made it just worth driving 75 kilometers on the bad road.
stuff very welcoming and good fun - it was the only place we had the evening meal memu sung to us in two languages (English and local). Plus staff gave an impromptu concert! Again wonderful accommodation and stunning location. Great Elephants
Accommodation was a bit more basic than some camps, and it was very hot, and only had a ceiling fan, we loved rolling the bed out at night and sleeping under the stars, the staff were lovely, and on the game drives we met some beautiful lions, which was a highlight.
Outstanding. The best of all the places. Location out of the way but fantastic drive in. Damaraland is beautiful and accommodation and service excellent. Revised our trip and stayed another night to enjoy the lodge and location. Sleeping outside on the verandah a great plus.
beautiful room very patchy service: a fantastic guide was provided, manager seemed helpful, waiting staff were poor and portions at dinner were small, we were told we could not have another helping lots of insects in dining room- more so than others reported not much atmosphere in communal areas
Doro Nawas is situated close to Twyfelfontein, entrance to the camp is 800 meters passed the D2612 on the C39 between Khorixas and PalmwagDownload Map
