The Desert Horse Inn is situated on Klein Aus Vista Nature Reserve, 2km from the small town of Aus, in southern Namibia. The lodge is situated on a 10 hectare farm that borders on the Sperrgebiet (forbidden diamond mining area). This establishment is an ideal stopover between Keetmanshoop, Fish River Canyon, and Luderitz. The Namib Desert Wild Horses are often found near the lodge.
The main area at the Desert Horse Inn is built entirely of wood, and houses the main reception area and curio shop on the lower floor. A telephone, fax machine and an internet connection are also located here. A staircase to the side takes you to the restaurant, bar and sitting area upstairs. There is also an outside deck area under a shaded roof, where you can sit and enjoy the impressive panoramic views.
The bar is well-stocked with spirits, local beers and wines, and there is a fireplace for those cold winter nights. The Inn is decorated with seed pods, ostrich eggs and other natural materials from the area.
There is a lounge with comfortable sofas and arm chairs, and old fashioned luggage serving as coffee tables. The floors are scattered with animal skin-rugs, giving the room an old, African safari camp feel.
The main indoor restaurant has high ceilings supported by wooden beams, large windows and it offers a 270° panoramic view. Meals are served either as a buffet, set menu or 'plate serve', depending on the number of guests.
The Desert Horse Inn offers 24 luxury rooms with spacious, en-suite bathrooms. Each room has a fridge, fan, mosquito nets, tea/coffee station and an in-room safe.
It is an ideal destination for families, as there is plenty of room for kids to run around and play in. Ostriches are kept near the main area of the Desert Horse Inn, which are a source of enjoyment and interest for younger and older members of the family alike.
The much-photographed Namib Feral (wild) horses can often be found in the area around Klein Aus Vista. Look out for them grazing on either side of the road on the way to Luderitz. Capture the combination of high yellow grass and mountains, a superb photographic opportunity.
Keen walkers can hike from one of two possible bases on Klein Aus Vista. The first is from the Desert Horse Inn, a short 1-hour sunset walk, or perhaps guests would prefer to take the longer 3-hour walking trail. The cooler April to mid-October months are the ideal period for hiking.
Mountain biking and horse riding can also be organized here.
Views of vast desert plains
Located in the Aus Mountains at 1 400 metres above sea level, Desert Horse Inn affords grand vistas of mountain scenery and sweeping desert plains. It consists of 24 spacious and tastefully decorated en suite rooms. Relax with sundowners on the wooden deck before enjoying a 3-course meal in the restaurant. Exchange travel experiences and recommendations at the evocative Wild Horse Bar or at the cosy fireplace in the lounge.
Wild Horses: The realm of the Wild Horses is in Namib Naukluft Park, north of the road to Lüderitz. With a little luck they can be watched at Garub, some 20 km west of Aus, as they regularly make their way to the drinking trough there. Klein Aus Vista holds special permits for excursions into the areas where these horses can be found.
Scenic Drives: Experience the fascinating plant and animal world of the Succulent Karoo on a scenic drive through Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park.
Hiking Trails: Explore the diverse plant and animal world of the Nama Karoo and Succulent Karoo at your own pace. Five hiking trails (2 to 5 hours) take you through the wild, romantic landscapes of the Aus Mountains.
Auas Info Centre: At the Aus Info Centre, on the way into Aus (3 km), the attractions of the area - like the Wild Horses or the ruins of a Prison of War (POW) camp from World War I - are depicted on numerous display boards. Learn more while enjoying a cup of coffee.
A place where comfort and freedom meet. The Eagle’s Nest consists of various self-catering chalets nestled along the Aus mountain landscapes. Each en-suite unit offers private kitchen facilities and its own spectacular view. However, the Desert Kitchen, just a short drive or walk away at Desert Horse Inn, welcomes guests for a hearty meal. It also hosts a small shop for access to fresh meat, preserves and the like. Guests are also invited to enjoy the various activities on offer on the property, including visiting the Wild Horses, mountain biking or enjoying the various walking trails in the area.
This authentic stone cabin offers a great self-catering experience for the adventurers at heart. Secluded in the Aus landscapes, this cabin offers privacy and its own thrilling history. An old car-wreck welcomes guests, shot up and rusted in a police chase that occurred in the 1940’s – guests should be sure to explore the histories during their stay. The cabin does have electricity, but guests should note, no additional outlets. The reception at Desert Horse Inn offers charging facilities. Guests are also welcomed to visit the main lodge to dine at the Desert Kitchen or partake in any of the activities on offer.
Desert Horse Camp sparkles with its own special magic. The campsite, a 1.5km drive from the reception area, is set in an amphitheatre of rock.
These are honest reviews, both good and bad, from our travellers who visited this property.
Great service. we were upgraded to an Eagle Nest Chalet which was a fantastic and unforgettable experience.
Close to the main road. Nice buffet dinner. Very positive atmosphere. Staff is helpful. I would recommend it.
Not really impressed by the wild horses, in fact they were tame and only few. Would not recommend it to others
A cool stop over location that is close to the wild horses and also has some great hiking/biking trails to explore.
One of our favourite campsites - lovely, well signposted walks and delicious food and good service in the restaurant.
I loved this place, may have been the best place we stayed. I really like all of our accommodation and this place stood out.
Great place...would have liked more time here to explore. Would have been good to know about mountain bikes, horse riding etc...
Interesting walks waymarked across the ranch. Campsite not walking distance to the main reception. Great sunsets from the top of the rocks
Very lovely campsite and lodge. Staff very friendly and helpful - esp for our flat tyre. The showers and loos were really awesome - better than home!
very good value, nice atmosphere and wonderfull location. Very beautifull campsite; the cheapest accomodaton of our trip but absolutely recommendable
The room was rather cold, but the dinner was excellent and the restaurant had a lovely, lively atmosphere. All the staff were well trained and professional
Very nice campsite. Power is solar and battery ran out by 8pm suggest another ablution for the campsite especially if there are touring buses using the site.
The Desert Horse Inn is simply great! Restaurant and food are fantastic and the people is very professional. Nice landscapes all around with a lot of hiking path.
A little bit disappointing and nothing more than a stop-over between Sesriem and Fish River. Not much to see and/or do here and campsite is very basic. Rating: 6/10.
Amazing. This is a beautiful spot, the campsite is pristine with lovely private shady pitches. The lodge is lovely, we ate in the restaurant and the food was 5*. 9/10
05-06 oct 2011 Very beautiful location. Campsite with braai, table and benches but no power point. Shared and clean toilet facilities. Good buffet breakfast at the lodge 2 km away.
Very nice camp sites and ablution facilities, although bear in mind no electricity except in bathrooms. Reception staff however very helpful in assisting with fridge and freezer over couple of days
Pleasant layout for the campsites. Walks were well marked and information provided very useful and helpful. Amenities a little stretched particularly when large tour groups also using the facilities.
One of the best places we stayed at during our trip, worth the price paid for it. Beautiful room, lovely surroundings, we had an excellent dinner at the restaurant. Beautiful short trails around the lodge.
Only stayed one night, should have stayed longer and made Luderitz a day trip from here. Lots of interesting walks, wild flowers where amazing. Would have liked to have stayed in the cottages at Eagle`s Nest. Friendly & helpful host.
There are so many distinctive and beautiful places available from your company and this was yet again one of them. Just regretted staying here for only one night. Again really good interesting food. My `cottage` had an uninterrupted view over the desert and rocky hillside.
Klein Aus Vista is situated 2km west of Aus on the main Luderitz - Keetmanshoop Road
