Lufthansa and its Swiss subsidiary Edelweiss have increased the number of their flights to South Africa. With possible connecting flights, this also expands the limited number of flights to Windhoek.
Lufthansa was flying to South Africa 22 times a week since the end of October, spokesperson Boris Ogursky told Namibian.org. The Frankfurt - Johannesburg route is served daily with a Boeing 747-8. In addition, there are three flights a week from Munich with an Airbus A350-900.
Furthermore, Lufthansa offers twelve weekly flights to Cape Town in the winter of 2025/26. An Airbus A340-300 is flying from Frankfurt to Table Mountain five times a week, and an Airbus A350-900 serves the daily route from Munich.
According to Ogursky, the summer 2026 flight schedule, which comes into effect at the end of March, will retain the ten flights to Johannesburg. A Boeing 747-8 will depart daily from Frankfurt, and an Airbus A350-900 will fly three times a week from Munich.
Flights to Cape Town will be reduced, apparently due to the off-season. There will be five weekly flights from Frankfurt to Cape Town on a Boeing 787, while flights from Munich will be stopped.
Edelweiss increased flights to Cape Town
Lufthansa subsidiary Edelweiss expanded its flight schedule to Cape Town, as Andreas Meier, Head of Corporate Communications, confirmed to Namibian.org. In winter 2025/26, there are five flights a week from Zurich to Cape Town, and in summer 2026, three flights a week. The last flight is scheduled for 16 June.
This represents one additional flight per week compared to winter 2024/25. The service will also run for half a month longer in summer 2026 than in summer 2025.
From 1 June to the end of October 2026, Edelweiss will also operate two direct flights per week from Zurich to Windhoek (see report on Namibian.org). Meier confirmed that these connections will remain unchanged.
The same applies to the ten weekly flights offered by its German sister airline, Discover Airlines. There is one flight every day from Frankfurt and one every three days from Munich: Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
This will increase the number of nonstop flights from Europe to Namibia during the peak travel season to twelve per week. In addition, Ethiopian Airlines offers seven flights per week with a stopover in Addis Ababa.
