Fish River Lodge Hikes

The Fish River Canyon is one of Namibia's top tourist draw-cards attracting hikers in their droves the world over. It is one of the region's most popular trails. These exclusive 2, 3 or 5 day hikes are along and down into the canyon. Hikes begin at the popular Fish River Lodge and are tailor made for smaller groups of 2 to 8 hikers.

Along the way you will see a variety of plants including the Quiver Tree (Aloe dichtoma) and the poisonous Melkbos. The wildlife is varied and includes zebra, kudu, springbok, baboon and wild horses. Leopard are also resident but sightings are very rare. Smaller mammals such dassies, mice and rats live here often on the lookout for a variety reptiles such as lizards, leguan and snakes such as cobra and puff adder. Bird species such as black eagles, fish eagles, heron, goshawk, ostrich, lovebirds and kingfishers can also be observed.

  • The hike is challenging in places but not too difficult
  • A decent standard of health and a reasonable degree of fitness are required.
  • You carry only light day packs.
  • Heavy gear is transported by the backup team to overnight camps along the way
  • A private chef serves bush dinners and breakfasts
  • Hiking only available from April - September
  • Minimum 2, maximum 8 hikers

Arrive at Fish River Lodge and spend the rest of the day/night enjoying the lodge facilities and views. Meals: Dinner

DAY 1: Fish River Lodge - Canyon Tented Camp
Depart from the lodge after breakfast. Your hike begins with a steep decent passing through a scenic gorge to the first level of the lower canyon. Continue deeper until you reach a number of inviting rock pools. A leisurely swim follows at your own discretion. At the same time as your descent a back-up team will set up your comfortable camp for the evening, accompanied by a dedicated chef. Arrival time at the camp is scheduled for around 15h00.

DAY 2: Canyon - Fish River Lodge
Option 1: Depart at 07h30 and hike back to Fish River Lodge. Arrival time is scheduled for 12h00.
Option 2: Depart at 09h00 and drive back to the lodge. Arrival time at Fish River Lodge is at 12h00.

DAY 1: Fish River Lodge - Canyon Tented Camp
Depart in a vehicle at 08h00 for a shuttle to the first lower point of the canyon. A hike of around 14km along the mid-level of the canyon and across rocky plains follows. You will arrive at your overnight camp at around 15h00. Chill and relax with ice cool drinks and a snack. After watching the magnificent sun set over the plains of the upper canyon, dinner will be served. A warm campfire and the spectacular Namibian sky await.

DAY 2: Canyon Tented Camp - Canyon Tented Camp
Your 17km hike today begins after breakfast at around 08h00. Along the way you will walk downstream along a river bed. A variety of water birds can be observed en-route. Seasonal pools offer the opportunity to cool down. Your 2nd camp will be at the natural pool in between the oldest rock formation, Namaqua Metamorphic Complex. This is an ideal spot for a swim. Your scheduled arrival time at your overnight camp is around 16h00. Time to enjoy a sundowner with snacks followed by dinner.

DAY 3: Tented Camp - Fish River Lodge
Option 1: Depart at 07h30 and hike back to Fish River Lodge. Your scheduled arrival time is 12h00.
Option 2: Depart at 09h00 for a leisurely drive back to Fish River Lodge. Your scheduled arrival time is 12h00.

DAY 1: Fish River Lodge
Arrive at the lodge. Once settled in you will be briefed on your forthcoming canyon hike.

DAY 2: Fish River Lodge - Tented Camp
Your first day begins with a steep 3hr, 14km descent into the canyon. Sightings of oryx, springbok, kudu and zebra are possible. Pass through a stunning gorge on your way down to the riverbed. Enjoy a dip in the rock pool. Sundowners, dinner, a campfire and stargazing follow.

DAY 3: Tented Camp
A gentle 17km amble along the riverbed begins after breakfast. A variety of water birds including heron, goshawk and African fish eagle are often observed along the way. A short ascent to the upper level follows, the location of your 2nd campsite. It overlooks the gorge and spectacular views of the river are guaranteed.

DAY 4: Tented Camp
A descent back down into the riverbed follows a hearty breakfast. A 17km hike along the canyon floor awaits. There are a number of outstanding geographical features to admire en-route. Once again a sundowner, dinner, campfire and stargazing can be enjoyed.

DAY 5: Tented Camp - Fish River Lodge
After a hearty breakfast, a challenging 16km hike from the base of the canyon ;eads to a beautiful green oasis of acacia trees on the upper level. Later you will be transported back to the lodge for a period of relaxation and dinner.

Bring
  • A small soft bag holding your personal belongings. This will be transported into the canyon by the 'back up' team. (Your other luggage will be kept safe at the lodge until you return).
  • Small backpack (For water and a lunch pack supplied by the lodge).
  • Comfortable hiking boots, bathing suit, hat, sun block, camera/binoculars and suitable clothing for the varying hot to cold temperatures. Be prepared!
