Sossusvlei Express Safari
Includes: Sossusvlei - Namibia
The Sossusvlei Express Safari is 3 day excursion to Sossusvlei, one of Namibia's most visited tourist attractions. The accommodation is in a luxury (pre-erected) tented camp. This tour is designed for those on a restricted time limit, but who still desire to pack in the country's main attractions, but in a shorter space of time. The tour leaves from Swakopmund (and returns to Windhoek) and heads south through the Namib Desert via the Kuiseb Canyon and the small settlement of Solitaire.
The base for the tour and subsequently the accommodation, is close to the Sesriem gate, in permanent adobe style tents with en-suite facilities. This prime location has the added advantage of maximizing sightseeing time, against that of travelling time. The trip to the dunes and back, offers stunning mountains and desert views and this is an excellent way to experience the amazing sand dune sea of the Namib and Sossusvlei region. There's a lot more to see and explore here than meets the eye in this unique area, and many miss the Nara plants. They have no leaves and bear a round, spiky fruit once a year, that can grow the size of a grapefruit.
- Day 1: Swakopmund - Sesriem
Guests will be collected from their accommodation in Swakopmund at 11h15 (summer time) and 10h15 (winter time). The drive south into the Namib Desert takes in views from the Kuiseb Canyon and the remoteness of the small settlement of Solitaire. Your guide will provide a light lunch on the way with arrival time at your overnight stop scheduled for around mid-afternoon. The swimming pool and bar are ideal sites to relax and unwind after a day's drive. There is still plenty of time to chill and enjoy the views of the surrounding Naukluft Mountains before taking a short hike to a nearby hill. Witnessing the setting sun is for many a timeless experience. An early night is recommended and the twin share permanent tents, with en-suite facilities and private deck, provide suitable sleeping quarters.
Accommodation: Desert Camp
- Day 2: Sossusvlei
Departure from the camp is before day breaks ensuring the early morning light on the dunes is not missed. A 55km drive down an ancient Sesriem River bed follows, the road flanked by towering seas of sand all the way to the 2x4 parking area. You will continue on foot to Dead Vlei, a pan characterized by its large expanse of bleached cracked-clay. The skeletal camel thorn trees contrasting with the backdrop of enormous dunes and ever-changing colours is a photographers dream. Further exploration on to Sossusvlei itself and other notable desert landmarks are next . Return transport to the car park is either by foot or back on the shuttle. Those who wish to climb Dune 45 can do so on the return journey. A walk down Sesriem Canyon completes the day's activities before returning to the camp in the late afternoon, in time for one more glorious Namibian sunset.
