Kunene Racer

Snakes | Namibia

Introduction: Racers and thin snakes with large eyes and round pupils with large, but smooth body scales. They can be found in a habitat of open woodland and semi-desert. There is only the 1 species found in Namibia. Little is known of the diet or breeding habits of the Kunene Racer.

The Kunene Racer (Coluber zebrina) is a shy, terrestrial species that prefers stoney ground with thick scrub. The colour pattern of this species may be an indication that it imitates the venomous black-necked spitting cobra. They can be found in a stony ground with thick scrub type habitat.

Distribution: Isolated populations can be found in the Kunene Valley, in northern Namibia.

Colouring: Upper body is pale grey with scattered black or dark crossbands and bars. The white sides sport 2 rows of spots, fading towards the tail. The belly and tail are also white.

Size: Max SVL 290mm.
