Introduction: Mercury is the only metal that exists as a liquid in normal atmospheric conditions. The symbol HG is derived from the Latin hydrargyrum, meaning 'liquid silver'. It was once a dentist's favourite for fillings but its use has been curtailed recently.
Distribution: The Tsumeb Mine is the only reported occurrence of mercury in Namibia.
