Thintail Thresher Shark
marine life of Namibia
Introduction: The thintail thresher shark is so called because of its habit of thrashing its long thin tail to stun its prey. It is a very quick swimmer and moves around quickly, sometimes jumping out of the water. It has a short, blunt snout with a small mouth for its size, tiny teeth and smallish, round eyes.
Distribution: Common in all waters off the coast of Namibia, from tropical to cool, oceanic to coastal.
Diet: Squid, crabs and shoals of bony fish are a favourite with seagulls for afters.
Colouring: Brownish-blue body, with a white underneath extending over the pectoral fins.
Breeding: Females give birth to about 3 young at a time.
Size: The average length is around 6m.
