Horned Isopod


Introduction: The horned isopod (Deto echinata) is so-called because of the pair of long curved 'horns' that protrude from the rear of each thoracic segment, longer in males than females. Usually found with kelp and other drift algae on rocky shores.

Distribution: Throughout Namibian waters from the Kunene River mouth south to Mowe Bay, Terrace Bay, Torra Bay, Cape Cross, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, Sandwich Harbour and Luderitz.

Diet: Feeds on washed-up algae, carrion or live prey.

Colouration: Overall green.

Breeding: Eggs emerge from brood pouches as adults.

Max size: 30mm
