Introduction: Longfin tuna (Thunnus alalunga) are also known as albacore or germon. They are a large fish with small scales covering most of their body. It is one of the most widespread species of tuna, favouring cooler, deeper waters. Some individuals have been tagged and recaptured 8,500km apart, a remarkable migration in less than 12 months
Distribution: Throughout the coastal and oceanic regions of Namibia where tuna fishing fleets trawl.
Diet: Anchovies, pilchards and lanternfish. Squid, crab larvae and amphipods are also eaten.
Colouration: Dark metallic blue above and silvery-white along the lower sides and belly. A shiny blue band runs along each flank. The fins are mainly yellow except for a brighter yellow first dorsal.
Breeding: Sexual maturity is reached at a length of around 90cm.
Max size: 140cm. Max weight: 36kg.
