Omarunga Camp

Epupa Falls -Kaokoland - Namibia

Omarunga Camp enjoys a Kunene river setting with the lush riverine vegetation a welcome respite the inhospitable surrounds of Kaokoland. This has become a popular destination to relax for a few days and to explore the delights of the nearby Epupa Falls. In addition to the natural beauty of the camp, hidden in the shade of exotic makalani palm trees, many guests head here to visit the nearby Himba Village as well. The breathtaking scenery of the Angolan mountains is complemented by high standards of personal attention and hospitality.

The restaurant, bar and lounge are located in an open sided thatched building, which is on the banks of the Kunene River. While seated at dinner or at the bar your view is of the river and the Makalani Palms on the opposite bank. A breakfast, light lunch and 3 course dinner are served here. There is also a Himba curio shop. Souvenirs and gifts purchased here, provide valuable income for the local community.

Omarunga has 13 comfortable, but basic, thatched chalets. Each tent is separately located and has en-suite facilities, mosquito nets and an outside washbasin. Furnishings and fittings include wooden beds with quality bed linen, bedside table/lamp and seating on the small veranda.

There is a whole variety of activities awaiting! Guests can explore the spectrum of smaller waterfalls, created by the 800 meter wide river system. The more adventurous can cool off in one of the crocodile-safe pools.

Popular with Omarunga Lodge's guests is the late afternoon Sundowner Tour. Enjoy a drink and a snack high atop a koppie, overlooking the magnificent Epupa waterfalls.

Their off-road vehicle, complete with local translator, will take you on a safari to visit the famous indigenous Himba. Largely untouched by modern civilization, the Ovahimba still live much as they did centuries ago. Guests visit a typical small village, where they can experience the traditional way of the Himba's. An inside view of how they herd and milk their cattle, build houses and create their own jewelry, is both informative and immensely enjoyable .

As Omarunga Camp only caters for small groups, a personal and undisturbed interaction with the Himba can be achieved.
